Iron Age and Later PrehistoryThe earliest ever British case of tuberculosis has been detected in a skeleton found in an Iron Age hamlet in Dorset. The discovery - reported in The Guardian - overturns the theory that the disease was introduced into Britain by the Romans. The skeleton shows that the man must have had an agonising death between 400 and 230 BC although he lived to 30 or 40 - around average for that time.
The bones - discovered by a local archaeologist excavating a site beneath the Roman villa at Tarrant Hinton in Dorset - have been subjected to extensive re-appraisal and more work is to come.
