The area covers about 315 square miles and, as befits its name (Glamorgan, welsh morgannwyg, means Morgan’s shore), is a maritime area bounded on the south by the Bristol Channel and on the west by Carmarthen Bay. It is an area rich in prehistoric sites and includes the 20 km limestone peninsula of the Gower, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Finds relating to the presence of man in the area date back to the Early Upper Palaeolithic – 36,000 to 25,000 BCE. There are around 22 caves scattered around the Gower which show traces of occupation from this period the most famous being the Goat’s or Paviland Cave near Port Eynon.
From the Neolithic period there some 14 or so megalithic tombs principally of the Severn-Cotswold construction ( e.g. Parc-le-Breos) although there are few portal dolmens (e.g. Sweynes Howe N). There are no surviving true stone circles in the area but there are many standing stones and round and ring cairns from the Bronze Age. The Iron Age is represented principally by the many hillforts, mostly of small to medium size.
