Any look at the Ordnance Survey map will reveal evidence of the land being inhabited for many centuries with burial chambers, hillforts, Roman forts, more recent castles and other features scattered across the county.
The two most impressive sites of interest to prehistorians must be the burial chambers at St Lythans and Tinkinswood. Situated only a short distance from each other, these two Neolithic sites were both built around 4000BC. Tinkinswood is notable on account of having the largest capstone in Britain, estimated to weigh in the region of 40-50 tons, and measuring 7.4m x 4.5m (24ft x 15ft). St Lythan's burial chamber stands proud in a windy and often muddy field, and has a classic Dolmen shape. The stones are completely exposed, with the burial mound that would have surrounded them having almost entirely disappeared.
North of Cardiff, from the top of Garth Hill, the highest hill in the area and the site of 5 Bronze Age burial mounds, you can see a panoramic view of the whole of South Glamorgan which gives you a true feel for the county's size and terrain.
