Site WatchA development consortium is hoping to build a university campus, housing and a science park within metres of a Wiltshire stone circle This Is Wiltshire reports. The campus may hold around 8,000 students from the University of Bath in Swindon and be sited “next to” the stone circle known as Day House Lane or Coate. Five stones of this scheduled site remain so the developers cannot touch the site. Les Durrant, on behalf of the consortium (containing the university, Persimmon Homes and Redrow), said: "We will not disturb this site, I can guarantee that”.
No plans have yet been submitted but the consortium have confirmed that any proposals will be accompanied by full archaeological evaluations.
One local resident is quoted as saying “It would make an excellent place for students at the new university to relax."
For the full story (with picture) see This Is Wiltshire.
PORTAL COMMENT: Clearly this is a proposal to keep a close eye on as this fragile monument will become subjected to a significant increase in the number of visitors leading to erosion and further ruination of the circle.
