Access to all Historic Scotland properties is free this weekend, an annual tradition that offers savings to tourists and gives local residents a reason to see what's in their "backyard". More than 58,000 people took advantage of the Historic Scotland Open Weekend last year. Zero price admission on Saturday and Sunday 16-17 April will apply to the most famous castles, abbeys and prehistoric monuments across Scotland.

The open weekend is an opportunity to see a variety of attractions, including Jarlshof prehistoric and Norse settlement on Shetland, the Arnol Black House on Lewis or Elgin Cathedral. A family of four - two parents and two adults - going to Edinburgh Castle can save £26.60 if they go this weekend. A visit to Skara Brae in Orkney will save a family £16.80.

"The Historic Scotland Open Weekend is a fantastic annual event, which all of Scotland can take advantage of," said Patricia Ferguson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. "It offers a wonderful opportunity to explore our nation's most iconic and inspiring built heritage attractions.

"The weekend also provides a superb showcase for visitors to Scotland to experience the best of Scotland's buildings and landmarks," Ms Ferguson said. "And with so many attractions open over the weekend, people will have the choice to visit just one or the challenge of visiting as many as possible."

As part of the promotion, there is also the opportunity to save money with a discounted Historic Scotland membership, if someone signs up this weekend.

Membership of Historic Scotland permits free entry to its 74 attractions throughout the year. In addition, membership includes discounts in Historic Scotland retail outlets and free access to an events programme that includes more than 400 listings in 2005.
