Bryn Cader Faner
Bryn Cader Faner submitted by thecaptain : Bryn Cader Faner. The Crown of Thorns circle (Vote or comment on this photo)
Saturday and Sunday September 17th and 18th, and maybe Monday 19th.

The very full itinerary is given in the full text, but will include a long walk to the Megalithic Crown of Thorns, the Bryn Cader Faner Ring Cairn. This will be a principal aim of the weekend, with several other sites in the area. Also the Lleyn Peninsula's megalithic remains will feature. Folk are welcome to join in as much as their needs or wishes dictate. Please read on, and get in touch if you decide to join in for any part.

We are basing ourselves in the Llanbedr area, where there are two stones at SH 583 270 and also marked stones in the nearby church

If we do not go to 3 days, then a visit to Dyffryn Ardudwy is a must SH 588 288

Lleyn Peninsula Itinerary:

Many possibilities here; sites I feel are a must are in capitals; others in lower case. The route is roughly anti clockwise, entering the Peninsula from the Porthmadog direction.

The Bryn Cader Faner Walk - this will be done on the better weather day of the Saturday or Sunday, should it be a clear choice:
Before doing this walk, there are the Moel Goedog stones and Bedd Gorfal Circle

i) Stone & cairn .6 miles after crossroads on right SH 599 309
ii) Another stone 500 metres further on left just after cattle grid SH602313
iii) Another, small stone 500 metres further on right SH 605 316
iv) Another (2 stones ?) on the left where the road levels SH 607 321
v) A pair of stones further on at SH 608 323
vi) Moel Goedog cairn circles east and west SH 610 324
vii) Moel Goedog settlement

It is suggested that if doing a linear walk taking in Bryn Cader Faner it is recommended, to leave a car near Caerwych Farm, off A496

If I have read the guidebooks correct, the route will take in
5 groups of hut circles
2 ring cairns
1 pair of 'stone rings'
1 concentric circle farmstead
2 burnt mounds
1 cairnfield
1 'circle of stones'
1 cairn
1 rectangular enclosure
as well as Bryn Cader Faner itself

Sites along the linear route:
After moving on from Moel Goedog take the track rom SH 631 338
- cairnfield, 2 round hut foundations, ruined cairn

- a group of stones; small 'circle'
- track cuts through the wall of older prehistoric settlement, 2 round huts with sheepfold over them

- Bryn Cader Faner SH 647 354
- descending from BCF, another groups of huts under sheepfold

- a ringcairn or large hut, a pair of 'stone rings'

- cairn, burnt mound, ring cairn at Y Gyrn

- concentric circle farmstead at Maes y Caerau

- rectangular enclosure and 2 round houses, single hut & burnt mound

Return to car(s) and pick up vehicle(s) left at start

Fuel Blockade & Meg Meet by TimPrevett on Wednesday, 07 September 2005
(User Info | Send a Message)
'ey up everyone... looks like we may be heading for another fuel blockade as in 2000... could impact the Gwynedd Meg Meet

see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4221296.stm

"The group says all UK refineries will be blocked from 0600 BST on 14 September unless price cuts are made."

I'll likely be travelling by train to Llanbedr, so if it doesn't affect trains, I'll still get there.

Alternative would be to do a lot more walking visits, instead of drive / stop.

We'll see how things shape up

cheers

Tim

The Moel Goedog complex is a must - it marks an amazing megalithic hike to Trawsfynydd - a prehistoric trackway if there ever was one.
