Mellor Hillfort
Mellor Hillfort submitted by PaulM : In 2004 another roundhouse was located close to 2003's. In the foreground you can make out the circular ditches (three in total) which show a possible multiphase development of the structure. In the background is the reconstruction of a roundhouse made by archaeology students from Ridge Danyers College in Marple. (Vote or comment on this photo)
It's that time of year again when the Mellor Iron Age hillfort in Greater Manchester showcases the latest finds from the north west's premier community archaeology project.

As with previous years The Friends of Mellor Archaeological Trust will will be on hand on the weekend of 3 and 4 September 2005 to guide you round the active trenches, teach you some modern techniques and let you browse the artifacts from several years' digging on this vicarage site.

The 2004 open days were reviewed on The Megalithic Portal and highlights included a stunning perfectly knapped flint dagger or spearhead and more structures expanding the area covered by domestic Iron Age structures.

At the open day the Trust will be previewing its new website and Stockport's new County Sites and Monuments record will be available for browsing - a Time team pottery expert will also be on hand to identify your all your china!

The results of the 2004 season and the proposals for 2005 can be found here and a new book is being published bringing together all the latest information on the Mellor site.

Note: The Portal recommends this prehistoric day out!

Will have to get to that! Anyone interested in this might like to visit our virtual reconstruction of an Iron Age hillfort at the Archaeological Reconstruction Company. It's still work in progress but interesting never-the-less. Mak
