North Yorkshire is the largest county in England covering 3200 square miles. The landscape in the county is divided into two rough areas - the moors and the dales, with the Yorkshire coast edging the eastern side of the moors. The area has been occupied for many thousands of years and evidence of this exists today in the form of howes, standing stones, stone circles and rock art. Many of which are easily accessible to the visitor.

Interspersed among the prehistoric remains are the signs of later occupation by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons and later still the Victorian inhabitants left behind their contribution to the industrial archaeology of the area. The moors and dales have been farmed and worked by a variety of people right up to the present day. Whether it be holy wells, wayside crosses or stone circles that interest you the scenic beauty of North Yorkshire acts a backdrop for all of them.
