Kent, although rich in historical remains (much by virtue of it being readily accessible to the continent of Europe and incursions over the millennia), yields only a small number of ancient sites and 'Medway' megaliths, but these are nevertheless very significant.

Evidence of Palaeolithic habitation comes in the form of several superb examples of hand axes unearthed at Swanscombe (Barnfield) Pit and at Oldbury (Ightham) where the remains of rock shelters are still in existence within the woods of the National Trust/English Heritage property. Adjacent to this site is the Iron Age Oldbury "hillfort". Another Iron Age enclosure can be found near Canterbury and is known as the Bigbury Camp "Hillfort".

Also of interest within the county is a selection of 'Medway type' burial chambers which are located within a few miles of each other. A good example is Chestnuts in Addington. It is situated in the grounds of the house "Rose Alba" and permission should be sought from the owner prior to visiting this site. Originally falsely refered to as a stone circle, the Coldrum Long barrow at Trottiscliffe is also worth a visit.

Similar to the long barrow of Coldrum is the ruined tomb ofLittle Kits Coty, also known as Countless Stones. It has effectively been broken asunder by the growth of a tree though its centre (some misguided religious folk often planted trees in what they considered "diabolic" sites to destroy them). The denuded and iron-caged Kits Coty House is located nearby as are the White Horse and Coffin sites. There is also an unchambered earthen long barrow, known as Julliberries Grave at grid ref TQ077532 near Chilham station.

Just on the border of Kent and Sussex I note Google maps brings up a site called Crockhenge. But I can’t for the life of me find any further info on this.

    I've visited Crockhenge twice this summer. The stones are arranged in an S shape and appear to be seats. One side faces east and other faces west. Presumably to see sunrise and sunset.
