MacBeth's Stone submitted by Nick : Leave Meigle on the road marked "Belmont Centre" and follow this for approximately 1-1/2 km west from Meigle. Pass the entrance to Belmont Castle and proceed to the entrance to Belmont Centre. There is sufficient space to park at the side here. Perthshire is one of Scotland's (and Britain's) largest counties, sitting land-locked in the centre of Scotland. Indeed, Perth, the main city in the county, is sometimes referred to as "The Perfect Centre." The geography of Perthshire varies widely from south to north - wide open tracts of fertile farmland in the south give way to the start of the Highlands in the north, with the foothills of the Cairngorms rising from the Highland boundary fault above Dunkeld.

Much of Perthshire is quite sparsely populated, particularly in the north and west, with most of the land used for farming or forestry. It was not always so in the past, with the glens supporting much larger populations and the towns smaller in size. Sheep and trees have replaced many of the people now, and Perthshire is known as the Big Tree County, containing as it does some of the tallest trees in Britain, and the oldest tree in Europe - the Fortingall yew.

Perthshire is rich in history and folklore, and it is difficult to go anywhere without coming across sites of interest. Perthshire has dozens of standing stones and stone circles dotted all over its vast area, as well as countless cairns, barrows, forts, homesteads and rock art. From the less distant past are the many decorated Pictish stones which, along with the proliferation of Pictish elements in placenames, hint at the importance of Perthshire to the Picts in the first millenium AD.
