Multi-periodColeraine's past, all the way back to Mesolithic times, is about to catch up with it. A report due out soon will show what the town should be doing to cash in on its Stone Age links. The earliest evidence of man in Ireland was uncovered at Mountsandel, near Coleraine in Northern Ireland, about 30 years ago during excavations by distinguished archaeologist, Dr Peter Woodman.Recently a steering group made up of experts from the Environment and Heritage Service, the Forestry Service and representatives from the local community was set up to consider its future potential.
At the same time a study into the various development and promotion options for the unique site is being carried out by a firm of consultants.
It is expected that a report on the outcome will be available within the next few months.
The Mountsandel site dates back around 9,000 years and the archaeologists found fish vertebrae, apple seeds, wild pig bones, hazel nut shells and water lily seeds.
