Cist in Devon

A cist with a capstone - 1.4m by 1.3m. 1.2m from the NW corner of the cist and incorporated into the outside edge of the cairn is a small upright granite slab - 0.5m long, 0.2m wide and 0.6m high. This stone is all that remains of the cairn circle that used to surround the cist.

Update August 2019: This cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for Swincombe Ford Newtake 1 Cist, which tells us this site is "a robbed cist within a cairn on a gently sloping north east facing moorland hillside".

This site is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 912169, which tells us that traces of the excavation still remain in the form of a depression 0.3m deep to the south eastern end of the cairn. The capstone has also been levered into this hole to gain access to the cist.

The Devon and Dartmoor HER also includes a record for this cairn: MDV54431 (Cairn in the Parish of Dartmoor Forest).
