**Royal Hill Cairns (SX621724)** submitted by thecaptain : Royal Hill Cairn 5 This is a cute little thing with a complete stone ring around a central cist, but there is little remaining in the way of a cairn. The surrounding kerbstones have a diameter of only about 3 metres, but all stand proud of the ground. (Vote or comment on this photo)

There are several cairns, many with cists still to be seen within them which can be found on the slopes of Royal Hill, to the southeast of Princetown. Perhaps the best preserved is cairn 3 at SX620721 which has an almost complete kerb circle, but I did not visit that cairn on my visit.

The first cairn of my visit was cairn 4, at SX621723, and it is fairly easily found as the remains stand fairly proud of the surrounding turf. It has a circular cairn, about 6 metres in diameter, with several kerbstones still in place. In the centre is a large cist, about 1 metre square, with its capstone displaced to the edge of the cairn.

Cairn 5 is easily seen to the north of cairn 4, and about 100 metres distant from it at SX621724. This is a cute little thing with a complete stone ring around a central cist, but there is little remaining in the way of a cairn. The surrounding kerbstones have a diameter of only about 3 metres, but all stand proud of the ground. The central cist is rectangular, about 1.5 metres by 0.5 metres with the large side slabs falling inwards. I thought this to be a very nice find.
