Childe’s Tomb
Childe’s Tomb submitted by thecaptain : Childe’s Tomb seen here looking southeast. This started life as an ancient kerbed burial cairn with central cist, but has since been Christianised with a cross as a marker for the “monks path” across the moor, if the legend of Childe is not believed. Part of the circular kerb structure (diameter 5 metres) is thought to be original, as is perhaps the large cist within. (Vote or comment on this photo)
To the north of Fox Tor, and on the southern edge of the legendary Foxtor Mire can be found the remains of Childe’s Tomb, named after the legend of Childe the Hunter, who supposedly froze to death here in a snowstorm in the 12th century. The hunter had left his considerable lands to whoever found and recovered his body for a proper burial, and the monks of Tavistock completed this task and built the cross on top of the ancient grave as a memorial to him.

This started life as an ancient kerbed burial cairn with central cist, but has since been Christianised with a cross as a marker for the “monks path” across the moor, if the legend of Childe is not believed. It has been modified many times, with the current cross on top dating from 1885.

Part of the circular kerb structure (diameter 5 metres) is thought to be original, as is perhaps the large cist within, but now hidden under the large granite structure built over the top. It is still used to this day, as when I visited, there was an urn containing ashes placed within the tomb.

Update August 2019: This site is featured on Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) - see their entry for the Childe's Tomb Platform Cairn Circle and Cist, which tells us this is a much disturbed cairn, " 9m in diameter and 0.3m high with a modern 'kerb' of blocks and slabs, 5.8m in diameter and 0.5m high, set upon the mound. At the centre is a well built cist 1.4m long, 0.5m wide and 0.6m deep. Over this is a two tier pedestal of eight well trimmed blocks, of three different lengths; a further half buried block lies S of the monument. Upon this is a replacement socket stone and cross, cut at Holne in 1885".

Childe's Tomb is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443322, which adds that "it is said to now include some original material and stands in its original location".

The Devon and Dartmoor HER also includes a record for MDV48907 (Childe's tomb cairn and cist, Dartmoor Forest).
