Cist in Devon

Featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website, the Great Gnat's Head Cist is described as "(the) cist measures a maximum 1.0m long by 0.70m internally and 0.7m deep. Two side slabs and a fallen end slab are extant. There is no trace of a cover stone."

Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 441573, which expands the description: "(this) Bronze Age cist is 0.91m long by 0.81m wide and 0.78m deep. Denoted on the north and south sides by edge set stones. The eastern end stone has now been displaced and lies between the two side stones. A slight mound (up to 0.2 metres high) surrounds the cist but this was probably constructed when the cist was restored following excavation in 1901. This found a pit dug into the floor of the cist but no finds were made. Scheduled."

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV5091, dates the cist anywhere from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC).

The cist is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1016146 (Two cairns and a cist on the western slope of Great Gnats' Head).
