Cheriton Ridge 2

Cheriton Ridge 2 submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd Feb 2011. To the east, I found plenty more broken and fallen stones, which if all in place would have meant that this setting was perhaps three rows of four stones, running laterally to what is the remaining sixpack.

Cheriton Ridge 4

Cheriton Ridge 4 submitted by TheCaptain on 3rd Mar 2011. This is much better than anything else I found out here. A large rectangular setting which has seven stones still standing, up to 2.5 feet tall, plus several others fallen and laying down.

Farley Water stones

Farley Water stones submitted by TheCaptain on 9th Mar 2011. “Standing Stones” are marked on the OS map, but I could find nothing obvious. What a lovely spot it is down here, well protected from any winds, and with a few trees growing in a little flat grassy area beside the babbling stream.

Hoaroak Hill

Hoaroak Hill submitted by TheCaptain on 9th Mar 2011. I couldn’t find anything of this, in a very swampy area. There is a nice tree and a couple of very active springs here in this delightful place.

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn

Cheriton Ridge ring cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Mar 2011. Approaching from the north, what looks like a stone (which I first assumed must be a sheep) can clearly be seen down by the saddle of the ridge, with some darker heather around it. As approaching nearer to this, and it can be seen that it is indeed a stone, with a few other smaller stones standing nearby.

Trowlesworthy West enclosure

Trowlesworthy West enclosure submitted by TheCaptain on 22nd May 2013. A little way from the downhill end of the western stone row is a circular enclosure, about 10m in diameter. I am not sure whether this is some kind of settlement enclosure (too big for hut circle, too small for animal enclosure) or perhaps a ring cairn.

Ringmoor Down Cairn 3

Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd May 2013. Ringmoor Down Cairn 3 does not look entirely convincing to me. It consists of a circle of fairly small stones of which only one or two are earthfast. There are no obvious cairn remains within this circle. Viewed here looking northwest

Some of the multitudinous remains of the well preserved settlement can be seen, a couple of the circular enclosures clear to the left and one above the leat between markerstone and tor.

Ringmoor Down Cairn 1

Ringmoor Down Cairn 1 submitted by TheCaptain on 29th May 2013. The 10 metre diameter Cairn 1 is about 100m east of Brisworthy stone circle. Not much is to be seen these days, just 4 or 5 dark stones of its surrounding kerb seemingly laying around the egde of a darker patch of grass.

Ringmoor Down Cairn 4

Ringmoor Down Cairn 4 submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2013. marked on the OS map as enclosure, is likely the remains of a fairly large ring cairn of 35 metres diameter. It is not easy to find, although given the right conditions, the central area can be seen to be flattened off from the basic moor.

Ringmoor Down stone circle submitted by TheCaptain on 31st May 2013. "restored" in 1909, supposedly not very accurately, some of the stones used were probably not original, and just found nearby.

Fernworthy Cairn N

Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Cairn Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 26th Jul 2014

Fernworthy Cairn N

Fernworthy Cairn N submitted by theCaptain on 26th Jul 2014. The cairn at the northern terminus of the northern stone row was until fairly recently covered by the forest, but this has now been cleared. Its not much to look at, but clearly defines the northern end of the row. Its about 5 m in diameter with a couple of surrounding kerb stones, and what I suspect is one of the side stones to a central cist being the most obvious feature.

Fernworthy Cairn SW

Fernworthy Cairn SW submitted by theCaptain on 26th Jul 2014. The northern terminus of the southwestern stone row is a circular cairn about 8 metres in diameter with a surrounding cairn of small stones. This cairn has a pit in its centre, and no signs of any cist like the others.
