D30 Exloo

D30 Exloo submitted by Martin_L on 25th Jun 2010. Aerial from the East. Chamber length 7,3m (clear 6m) Width varies from 3m to 3,4m (clear 2m) The chamber is deeply embedded into the sandy ground. All orthostats were (and still are) preserved in situ when van Giffen examined the site in the early 20th century. Capstones C1 (counting from the North) and C2 were robbed, C3 was fallen and C4 in situ. Obviously C3 was placed back on its orthostats and C2 probably was replaced. The lateral passage (marked "E") has preserved one pair of ortho...

D43 Emmen Schimmeres

D43 Emmen Schimmeres submitted by Sunflowerbird on 7th Mar 2005. Emmen Schimeres is the only 'langgraf' in the Netherlands and feels very much like Wayland's Smithy. It has a complete kerb of massive stones and its chambers are just beginning to show through what is left of its barrow. A monster and a beauty just on the outskirts of Emmen (off the Odoorn Road). Signposted. Opposite the Mazda garage.

D51 Noordsleen submitted by Martin_L on 5th May 2009. The whole ensemble viewed from the North-East. The chamber is more than halfway filled with earth. The easternmost capstone is still in situ. Only the tops of its uprights are visible. Hopefully the picture shows a bit of the fine ambience of this beautiful site (April 2009)

The covering barrow is largely removed as well as the drywalling. The position of the lateral entrance is marked "E". The passage is robbed except for one orthostat, but the positions of the 3 missing orthostats are marked with concrete implements. D17 Rolde

D17 Rolde submitted by Martin_L on 9th Nov 2009. View from the North. The capstones partly collapsed into the chamber. Probably a result of historic destruction attempts and the removal of all smaller stones and the dry walling. Nevertheless a very impressive site. The nearby site D18 is visible in the background. D16 Balloo submitted by Martin_L on 25th Nov 2010. Oblique pole aerial view from the East-North-East. Length of the 9-capstone passage grave is 15,6m (clear 13,8 m). [1] This is one of only two currently known sites with cupmarked capstones in the Netherlands: There are several weathered cup-marks on capstones C4 and C5 (counting from the West). The site was restored: the fallen capstones were placed back on their supports. The chamber is halfway embedded into the ground (and/or remains of the covering oval barrow). August 2010...

D15 Loon submitted by Martin_L on 26th Jan 2011. Oblique pole aerial view* from the SE. The impressive 5 capstone passage-grave has preserved most stones of its oval enclosure appr. (16,5m by 10m). Most of them are fallen. The 9,6m [1] chambers' megalithic skeleton is largely in situ except for the central capstone C3, that was partly robbed in historic times. As at several other sites in Drenthe the westernmost capstone is the largest. *Foreground slightly stretched in this one as a result of wide-angle lens [1] Reference: Giffen,...
