D50 Noordsleen submitted by Martin_L : Pole aerial view from the South-East showing the halfway exposed 17m x 4,35m chamber [1] and the oval enclosure. The covering barrow is largely removed as well as the drywalling. The position of the lateral entrance is marked "E". The passage is robbed except for one orthostat, but the positions of the 3 missing orthostats are marked with concrete implements. Photo taken in August 2010 ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Well signposted in the village of Noordsleen near Emmen, Drenthe. this hunebed (Passage Grave) lies complete with kerbstones close to its more trashed neighbour, D51.

D50 Noordsleen
D50 Noordsleen submitted by Martin_L : Try to give an idea of how the builders saw their site: the chambers' inside viewed from the East. Of course it nowadays is halfway filled with earth and the drywalling (and possibly further interior details) is/are robbed. Nevertheless it is evident, that the builders were mainly interested in the appearence of the inside. The flat sides of all erratics face towards chambers' inside. Reference...

D50 has never been excavated in a scientific way. It has been restored in 1962 and 1998. Its neighbour D51 has been restored in 1962. For the near future no excavations are planned, in none of the Dutch monuments actually. Archeologists prefer to preserve the current state and don't want evidence to be destroyed.

Dutch "hunebedden" were very likely all used for funerals, but evidence is scarce as the soil is very acid. No bone material will survive that. For some monuments there is proof however (not D50 however).

As for Martin_L's remark about earthen barrows covering the monuments: For several Dutch monuments it has been proven by Lanting that they were covered up in stages, so every time the barrow became a little bit higher. Certainly not all the capstones were fully covered by earth all the time. D50 was not investigated for this though, so we don't know how the covering worked out here.

just a quick reply without many details: thanks. whenever sites of this type (mostly attributed to Funnel beaker culture (TBK, Trichterbecherkultur) (Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland) have been excavated and the circumstances allowed to recover the interior it turned out, that they contained burials. Up to 300 bodies. There is a lot of evidence, that all this chambers were originally fully hidden inside (mainly earthen) barrows (including coverage of the capstones). Depending on the size the chambers had passages/entrances which could be closed with smaller door stones/portals which allowed reopening for next burials. Somehow the builders seemingly felt it is necessary to completely surround their deceased ones with rocks (even the floor was paved and the drywallings between the orthostats and capstones left not the slightest gap). Fascinating as this happened in areas which mostly lack any quarrys and only had glacial erratics of various sizes available. Would be interesting to know if they wanted to protect themselves from revenants or wished to protect their dear departed. Or both. Various grave goods indicate they probably at least cared for them in way. Cheers
