Passage Grave near Loon in Drenthe

Out of the village of Loon only one field's width away from the railway track this ones got tons to see. Kerbstones, bit of barrow, good capstones and tons of style. We'd have spent more time here were it not for driving rain and a terrible smell of rotting turnips.

Hunebed, Tombe de Hun, résulte de transmission orale d'évènements historiques connus dans la mémoire collective, mais dont les contours s'étaient estompés. On observe le même phénomène, dans le domaine des monuments mégalithiques, au Portugal par exemple, où le terme Casa dos Mouros, Maison des Maures, a été très fréquemment utilisé. Nul besoin de faire intervenir le merveilleux.

This is a common error, as the low german/dutch words for 'giant/very large person' 'Hûn/Hun/Hüne' show similarity to the English term 'hun'. But this tribe is called 'Hunnen' in Dutch/German. If you still believe in your idea i suggest you confront the Dutch archaelogists and linguists with it. Every book on Dutch and German megaliths has to be corrected then. Mentioning Portugal is off-topic in this context.

This is interesting. In Germany, the term "Hünenbett" is used, which sounds very similar to "Hunebed". But "Hünenbett" means "bed of a giant" (Bett = bed / Hüne = very big man or giant).

D15 shows the intact structure of a hunebed, complete with its outer circle and its entrance (on the right, best visible on the aerial view : see front page photo by Martin).
Originally, a mound covered the whole monument, which was removed in 1870, by lack of knowledge at that time : this is why the stones circle is still intact. Also, smaller stones would have been used to plug the gaps between uprights, but they have been removed along with the mound.
As such, D15 is a good exemple to start a comprehensive tour of the 50+ hunebedden.
Hunebed (plural : Hunebedden) simply means "Huns' bed", a name given sometimes during the Dark Ages when such peculiar monuments have been ascribed to these terrifying invaders ( Huns ) having terrorised Western Europe in the 5th c. AD.

The correct translation of the term 'hunebed' is 'giant's bed'. The term hune / hunnen means giant / giants in medieval dutch. This has been explained in many books dealing with Dutch megalithic tombs.
