Cairn with cist in Devon

Lying some 600 metres to the west of Down Tor Cairn, this site is featured on Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks as Down Tor Cist.

Pastscape Monument Number 438538 describes this site as: "a small cairn of diameter 4.3m and height 0.3m containing the remains of a cist. This cist measures 1.6m by 0.9m externally, 1.0m by 0.6m internally and has a depth of 0.6m. It consists of two sidestones. one endstone and a displaced coverstone measuring 1.8m by 0.9m. It is orientated east-west .... on the southern slope of Down Tor at 33.5m OD .... on a shelf below the Tor rocks."

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV3423 dates the cairn to the Bronze Age (2200BC to 701BC) and adds that the cist is orientated almost east-west.

The cairn and cist are scheduled as Historic England List ID 1008642 (Round cairn 100m south of Down Tor).
