Ben Pitcher gave a fascinating talk at Stone Club's First Birthday Event on Monday. Ben is a reader in Sociology and the Megalithic Portal was there to record it (and drink some Stone Club beer). Ben's forthcoming book is Back to the Stone Age: Race and Prehistory in Contemporary Culture. Who are we? Where did we come from? What are we like? These questions are alive in contemporary culture.

"Exploited by capitalism, overwhelmed by technology, and living in the shadow of environmental catastrophe, human origins are understood as key to unlocking a viable future. We are increasingly looking backward to go forward. But we cannot know what 'really' happened in prehistoric times. Although I appreciated his anti-fascist sentiments and how he exposes right wing hubris in claiming white ownership of Britain, his disparaging of the modern Megalithic burial mounds and tomb complexes was disrespectful and insulting. I didn't like him or his stilted presentation, and his claim that these modern sites are built for the elite older generation is utter nonsense. Compare what it costs to be interred here with a conventional burial and you will find that it is much cheaper. I thought this rant was filled with envy, hubris, and a total lack of appreciation for the superb design and construction of these beautiful modern sites, and his disdain for them makes me question his credibility in all other matters.

Re: Greta, this guy speaks to a lot of young people, they are certainly feeling done over by those aged 56+ (I won't say 'the word' - don't worry) - it's hard to disagree. If you only watched the first 5 mins then wood burners are certainly a big issue in London, maybe not elsewhere. I wouldn't want one in my living room.

I used to be one of those believers, until I looked into all this myself instead of trusting the likes of the BBC, then I changed my mind ( it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks ). Now that my eyes have been opened, I can see quite clearly the hypocrisy of the people who are manipulating the likes of Greta and her generation. It's very sad, and so is finding this propaganda on the Portal.

Responsibility for climate damage fall squarely in the lap of capitalism and greed. Ignorance of consequences is largely based on a lack of information. Science has shown us so much more than it did in years past.
Yes wood burners are bad, but as he points out people know that man has always burned wood since time immemorial and it didn't occur to them that it was bad until science enlightened us about the particulate matter it produces.
