Thousands of Inca Mummies Discovered

Other ArchaeologyHundreds of Inca Mummies have been removed from a site near Lima, Peru. The Inca cemetary at the settlement of Tupac Amaru is part of the sprawling burial grounds of Puruchuco and could contain as many as 10,000 individuals. However, only about 12,000 mummies have been recovered.Many of the mummies were in "mummy bundles", cocoons that hold up to seven individuals and are possibly family groups. What is exciting Peruvian archaeologists is the fact that 40 of the "mummy bundles" are topped with false heads called 'falsas cabezas'. Only one of these has been documented before. The 'falsas cabezas' are thought to be the remains of the Inca nobility.
Along with the mummies, 50,000-60,000 artifacts were discovered. "This is one of the most significant finds in the history of Inca archaeology," said Guillermo Cock, the project leader of the investigation. "This is an extremely important find," echoed Professor Chris Donnan of UCLA.
Unfortunately the dig had to be curtailed due to lack of time and finance and many more significant finds are lost beneath the ever growing needs of the Incas living descendants.
