ResourcesStanding with Stones, the classic megalithic road trip by Rupert Soskin and Michael Bott is now available to view on Youtube. The film is an exploration into the wealth of prehistoric sites in Britain and Ireland on a scale never previously attempted on film, and aims to give a fresh insight into our megalithic past.

The entire 136-minute documentary - written and presented by Rupert Soskin and produced and directed by Michael Bott was researched, scripted, narrated and filmed between the two of them, including composing all the music and creating the computer graphics!

The whole film is available on Standing with Stones Youtube page.

Background: Rupert is an explorer who led three expeditions into the jungles of northern Colombia to visit the Kogi Indians, and also studied archaeology, anthropology and evolutionary psychology. He first met documentary filmmaker Michael Bott when Michael was working with on Origins of the Da Vinci Code for Channel 5 UK TV - he has also made The Man Behind the Da Vinci Code, for the History Channel.

Viewer comments from the DVD version

"... thankyou very much. It's terrific - very rich. Lots of information, great pictures - I especially liked the animated re-creations. ". BG - Cootamunda - AUS

"... put on the DVD that night, intending to watch about an hour, but my wife was so fascinated we watched the whole thing; it was excellent". NR - Coventry

"... very impressed with what I have seen, my husband who is not interested in history of any subject was amazed at what he was watching" SG - Milton Keynes

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. Many thoughts provoked and many new sites to visit. Overall can't fault it at all. Presented in an open and thoughtful manner. Superb photography. Many thanks for the link..

Five stars, thumbs up, etc., for 'Standing with Stones' film! by Flyvapnet on Thursday, 09 May 2013

I highly recommend Michael Bott's documentary feature film Standing With Stones: A Journey Through Megalithic Britain (Warwick: Illuminated Word Ltd., 2008). I've just finished screening it and am quite impressed. Rupert Soskin's narration, presenting and writing are engaging and altogether first rate; Bott's photography is beautiful, plus his masterful editing--in addition to everything else he does--makes the flim move right along.

This is a very entertaining and informative production. If anyone needs to know why they should be interested in a bunch of old stones, they need but screen this film to discover an answer. Not everyone can afford visits to a variety of sites at a variety of locations; and that's one reason I like this Bott/Soskin journey.

My own too-brief tour of the U.K. in 2008 included Stonehenge and Woodhenge. Given the money and time, I'd have loved to visit additional sites; but those two places more than sufficed: I've seen them, I remain impressed...

Good news: Yesterday I received my copy of Standing With Stones: A Journey Through Megalithic Britain from Amazon.com; and it does in fact contain all the extra features—apart from the postcards—touted at Amazon.co.uk for the now-unavailable U.K. release! Since Amazon.com's description of the digital versatile disk contained no mention of any extra features—and since extras are (nearly) always mentioned in such descriptions—I erroneously reported no extras were included with the U.S. release. I was wrong (Yay!) and I apologize to one and all, especially to Messrs. Bott and Soskin.

I suggest Messrs. Bott and Soskin contact Amazon.com and request those extra features be mentioned in their film's description. Compare the Amazon.co.uk description with the Amazon.com description and you'll see what I mean.

More good news: Furthermore, the U.S. release is in fact an All Regions disk and not a Region 1 disk! Less-than-good news: However, it is a so-called NTSC (National Television System Committee) disk rather than an All Formats disk. The format so often referred to as NTSC is actually called ISO/IEC 13818-2 (ISO is International Organization for Standardization and IEC is International Electrotechnical Commission), but disk distributors are sticking with the obsolete NTSC label.

On its way to me even as we speak is the Timothy Darvill and Rupert Soskin book Standing with Stones: A Photographic Journey Through Megalithic Britain and Ireland (London: Thames & Hudson, 2009), via Amazon.co.uk. It was shipped on 9th May and is due to arrive on the 30th! Apparently Kon-Tiki has been refitted and pressed into service as a cargo carrier.

Standing with Stones - a journey through megalithic Britain & Ireland.

Over two years in the making, this feature length (134 minutes) documentary is an entirely independent production conceived and executed by two men with a passion for ancient megalithic sites. Rupert Soskin and Michael Bott have created a totally unique film that goes beyond Stonehenge to deliver a stunning journey through England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, visiting over 100 extraordinary Neolithic & Bronze Age sites along the way.

1. The West Country & Dartmoor (21 minutes)
2. Southern England (21 minutes)
3. Wales (16 minutes)
4. Ireland (19 minutes)
5. Isle of Man & Northern England (26 minutes)
6. Scotland (16 minutes)
7. The Scottish Isles (17 minutes)

Michael Bott writes: The film was made over two years in 2006/7. It has been previously available on DVD and paid download but has still to retrieve its production costs. It is available to watch in its entirety here for free but you would be...

    Hi Andy
As you recommended I bought the Standing with Stones video from Destri and it is brilliant. It will have a lot of viewings. I found I had no problems as I already had Quck Time Player downloaded. Love the music and brilliant photography. I now have many more sites to visit on my next journey in the UK. I hope Megalithic Portals get a good kickback from promoting this video.

Hello June, I'm glad you like it, I need to contact Michael about that as we should do. Anyway you can set an avatar here http://www.megalithic.co.uk/user.php?op=edituser or if you're planning on using the forum a lot you can send over a custom one of your choosing. You can also upload a photo of yourself to the 'People' section of the photo gallery if you like.

The Making of 'Standing with stones' by Andy B on Wednesday, 18 July 2012

To start with, here is a sequence of clips that you won’t see in the film for one reason or another. Hopefully it’ll give you a flavour of our experience filming this movie.

The adventures of two men and a camper van by Rupert Soskin

It was back in 1999 that I first approached Michael Bott with the idea of making a documentary series on little-known aspects of one of my other passions: Natural History. I was already familiar with Michael’s work. He had made a couple of films with my father, Henry Lincoln, and his impressive talent made the normally painstaking decision of who to approach, a complete no-brainer. Michael loved the idea but he very sensibly suggested that, as this was such a massive project, it would be more sensible to kick off with something else. Something we were both familiar with and could do more easily, to see how well we worked together. Little did we suspect, how an intended ‘interim’ project would become such a life-changing experience.

At 2'20" into this is the boys standing by the road at Cerrig Duon with the rain pouring down and comments about "Typical Welsh weather." The first time I met Cerrig was here in similar circumstances. As I left I saw him drying out wads of money over his car's heater.

Maybe that's why Wales only warrants 16mins of the video!

I bought this video & downloaded it the other day, it is really interesting and I really recommend it (makes me want to get in my car & go travel!)

Just in case this is useful info for anyone else - I was initially very disappointed in the quality of the video. I was playing the video in Windows Media Player & it kept jumping, bit like I was watching it online (i.e. streaming) rather than locally from my pc. I tried it in iTunes and it was even worse. I eventually tried in my DVD player software and it plays perfectly.

Thanks,
Kate.
