Political Correctness in Britain has gone mad. Bristol City Council has recently spent lots of good honest council taxpayers money on ripping up and digging out yew trees near a childrens play area in a park near an ancient hillfort and settlement. This is all because somebody has complained to the council that the yew berries may poison a child. And of course, the spineless council fears an attack by lawyers, and has dug up the trees.

Mind you, it gets worse. They have also decided to knock gravestones over, to prevent the possibility of them falling over and hurting somebody.

i wish i could say i was jim however i would not throw the seads on the floor at westonbirt as they are poisonous but im still alive and dosnt every body now spit out pips by habbit including kids!

well actually only the black pip in the middle is poisonous the red outer is fine to eat i have done it my self

Yew trees have nothing to do with ID cards and Iraq!
What is being suggested is that the overall situation is totally ridiculous - and with the present "nanny state " that the UK is entering objections should be voiced as loud and as often as possible.
As for your "what a prat " statement - that is not what this forum needs!
Constuctive criticism is acceptable.

This is written from retirement after 40 years of world wide work in the field dealing with the result of natural disasters, terrorism ,civil wars etc etc so I accept your point of view but do not agree with it

Let's just hope the ESTABLISHMENT doesn't start believing that stones have powers or we'll be banned from visiting them.....
which gives me a photoshop idea - a govt health warning on a stone.

This Mother is doing no more or less than Tony Blair and President Bush, pre-empting crime, harm, injury, terrorism, WMD, and so on. Like Identity Cards, the proliferation of preventative measures in order to keep us secure and ever more unhappy is an ever increasing slippery slope into The Controlled State

The presumption of innocence is now a thing of the past. The bogus argument used to defend Identity Cards, 'if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear,' is entirely false. It is liberty itself that is at stake here, in which we are increasingly discovering that 'Silence is a Vote'.

Take the issue of terrorism, not one of us knows how much of a threat is involved. Certainly, in my daily life, my doings and affairs, it's a non-event, but we are told it threatens the stability of the world. What utter nonsense, yet we are fed an almost daily diet of preventative mis-information, the world turns ugly in our minds and becomes a place of fear and danger.

    What has the digging up of yew trees got to do with ID cards and the invasion of Iraq? Hopeyour nice little life remains unaffected by the reality of terrorism. Some of us have not been so fortunate. What a prat!

      i agree fully that ID cards and iraq have alot to do with yew trees if a parent can make such a fuss about a yew tree yet they can sit back and watch the world we live in fall apart i think we have a problem for god sake. The world will only look after us if we look after it and by cutting down yew trees, fighting and having our freedom stripped from us is a major thing in my life.

      The fuss about yew tree poison is because of the threat of litigation. In our compensation culture, imported from USA, anyone will sue anyone for anything if they can get some "compo". Just look at all the television adverts for injury and accident compensation lawyers - "no win - no fee and nothing taken away from the money you are awarded!"

      That is the reality and it has absolutely nothing to do with nanny states, Iraq, ID cards or any such smoke-screen fashionable cant. It's about American derived greed and the need for local authorities, churches, public bodies, landowners etc to avoid expensive payouts by minimising risk. I deplore it too and hate the over caution - but put the blame where it lies and think for yourself.

    I am afraid that yew trees have everything to do with ID cards, the current handling of terrorism, the nanny state and so much that is being done for no good reason. The mind set of the woman who complained is the thin end of the wedge that allows and enables Tony Blair to pursue policies that are bringing about the end of habeas corpus, trial by jury, innocent until proved guilty and so on. It has never been more true or more critical that we understand that the personal is political.

Absolutely stupid! Luckily it was a fairly new yew hedge.. hopefully our churches with their massive yews will not fall foul of these particular "worrying" parents, Theres a site on the web that records old yews - wonder how many those old trees have poisoned?
