Lindow submitted by Vicky : Lindow Moss near Wilmslow where two or possibly three bog bodies including Lindow Man or Pete Marsh (now in the British Musuem) were discovered in the 1980s. A prehistoric trackway was also reported in the area in the 19th century. The layer of sphagnum peat in which the bodies lay has now almost completely disappeared due to commercial peat cutting on the Moss. (Vote or comment on this photo)
In the early 1980's the remains of a body in a Cheshire peat bog triggered an archaeological frenzy that causght the imagination of a nation. It turned out that the remains of more than one Iron Age body were to be found but Pete Marsh was rushed off to London where he is now a permenant exhibit in the British Museum. Now a major exhibition in Manchester aims to bring the story back home...

The Museum of Science and Industry will be hosting Bog People from 5 February to 8 May 2005.

Human remains unearthed over the past two centuries from the bogs of northwestern Europe, provide an astonishing insight into the lives of the Mysterious Bog People. Explore the rituals and sacrifice that took place thousands of years ago and discover how scientific and forensic analysis has been used to determine the age and characteristics of the bodies, even revealing the contents of an individual’s last meal.

Note: This exhibition starts next week.

i think he bodies found like this are really fasinating but i am only 11 so ive got a long wait until i could start studying bodies and stuff. but i am doing a newspaper on it so its a start! from Holly Skillen, 11, from Cumbria

EUROPE'S ancient bog lands, where ritual human sacrifices were made to appease the gods, are being re-created in Manchester.

The exhibition, The Mysterious Bog People, opens for its only UK date tomorrow until May 8 at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Staff say it is one of the most exciting and controversial exhibitions in recent years. It is visiting Manchester as part of an acclaimed international tour.

It charts more than 14,000 years of cultural history and contains more than 400 artefacts found in the bogs or swamps of north west Europe.

It is the first time such archaeological finds, including the oldest known boat in the world, jewellery, coins and musical instruments, have been brought together.

Spirits



Japp Beuker, a museum curator from the Netherlands, who is travelling with the exhibition, said: "In ancient times, the bogs of north western Europe were dangerous, foggy places where many people disappeared, never to return.

"Early civilisations believed that the gods and spirits who controlled life and death, good harvests and bad and sickness and health, inhabited these swamps.

"Many of the mummified bodies found in the bogs had had their hearts punctured with sharp objects or their throats cut, proving that for thousands of years the bogs were the scenes of ritual human sacrifices to win the gods' favour. It is possible that some may have been victims of conflict, but in the main we believe they were sacrificed."

The exhibition features mummified human remains which are more than 2,000 years old.

Scientists have carried out forensic and scientific analysis to find out what our ancestors looked like, learn about their beliefs and superstitions and even find out the contents of one individual's last meal.

Visitors also have the chance to come face-to-face with extraordinary reconstructions of Yde girl, a 16-year-old from the first century AD discovered in the Netherlands, and Red Franz, an adult man from 200 AD found in Germany.

Staff warn that as the exhibition contains human remains some people may find it disturbing. Details and ticket prices are available by ringing 0161 832 2244.
