Dowsers find answers with earthly solutions

FunCountry: United States A couple from Melbourne, Florida once made a call to Ed Straight in Holmes Beach for help in finding their lost cat. "They sent me a street map and some of its hair," said Straight, president of a local group that believes divine answers to just about any question can be found through the practice of dowsing. That includes finding lost cats.It's a belief they quietly share with pockets of people worldwide.
The Manasota Dowsers is one of three Florida chapters in a nationwide organization called the American Society of Dowsers. Other nations host similar organizations.
Dowsers were historically known as people who looked for water or minerals with forked sticks that jerked when held over the sought-after resource.
Some historians trace dowsing back to the Egyptians, and some even further to prehistoric cave paintings. Even though scientists discredit the practice, dowsers are still commonly hired to help people find a spot to drill a well.
