Strike at English Heritage sites postponed

A planned strike by workers at English Heritage has been postponed because of continued talks over a pay dispute. Walkouts were planned for Friday and next Monday. The Public and Commercial Services union and the Prospect union have postponed any industrial action until April 2.

Previous Story: Staff at leading historic tourist attractions in England, including Stonehenge and Dover Castle, are to stage a one-day strike over pay.

Hundreds of workers at English Heritage will walk out on March 11 in protest at an imposed pay award of 3.5%. Their union, Prospect, says it is one of the worst pay deals affecting Government workers, leaving staff earning 10% less than other civil servants.

Negotiating officer Steve Jary says workers can not understand why English Heritage is taking £500,000 out of the payroll budget to spend on advertising.

"It seems once again that management have made choices which ignore the need to resolve pay and equality anomalies within the system, in favour of choices which leave staff feeling overlooked and let down."

English Heritage says it is waiting for the outcome of a ballot among members of another union also involved in a pay dispute.

"We shall be considering our position in the light of both unions' responses and continue to hope that staff will choose not to take industrial action of any kind."
