Salisbury tourism supremo warns that “the unwary visitor is being conned” if the controversial plans for Stonehenge and its proposed discovery centre go ahead reports the Salisbury Journal and Avon Advertiser.

Don Cross, managing director of Wessexplore Tourist Services in Salisbury, cites an article by renowned archaeologists as supporting his claim that the proposals will damage tourism and are a waste of money.

In the article in Current Archaeology magazine, Chris Chippindale and Ian Baxter call for a brownfield approach to the future of Stonehenge, with the emphasis on enhancing existing facilities.

They fear visitors will be "conned" by lengthy and controlled visits to the proposed discovery centre, due to be built three kilometres away.

Chris Chippindale, former editor of Antiquity, author of Stonehenge Complete and reader in archaeology at the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and Ian Baxter, lecturer in tourism and heritage at Glasgow, say visitors generally want simply to see the stones and take photos.

The hi-tech presentation at the centre could even make the real thing a disappointment by the time they get there.

"The tourist will be charged to see `Stonehenge - the visitor centre' without actually getting anywhere near Stonehenge at all," they write.

"To our mind - and we use a strong word - this sounds like the unwary visitor is being conned."

Let's hope that the planned "discovery Center" contains a gift shop-where I can buy plastic replicas-a gift wrapping and mailing service, an exotic food court, food machines for those too busy for the cafe, state of the art restrooms, internet outlets, and a car wash in the auto park. Oh yes, a variety of t-shirts with "cute" sayings and videos of the site for sale just in case I don't have time for an actual visit. A classey touch would be books, literature on preserving the environment. Go Friends!
