Shropshire Meet June 11th and 12th 2005

The itinerary*, by Shropshire Traveller, will include the Bronze Age landscape of The Long Mynd, and the archaeologically rich area around Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle. Click 'more' for a full linked itinerary and details.
Saturday 11th June
10am start at Pole Cottage parking area. The first part of Saturday 11th June will focus on the Bronze Age landscape of The Long Mynd, looking at the prehistoric track route of The Portway, 400 ft long Devil's Mouth Cross Dyke, 500 ft long Barrister's Plain Cross Dyke, 1100 ft long High Park Cross Dyke, with some barrows, the best being the Shooting Box Disc Barrow. To Bridges for lunch (pub opening needing to be verified), then to Shelve and Pennerley to investigate sites of possible stone circles. The Lord's Stone, and then evening meal / refreshment, then possibly a walk up to Corndon Hill giving a vast panorama (subject to weather!) into Shropshire and Central Wales, also providing a birds eye view of Sunday's visits, and with numerous sizeable cairns to take in.
Sunday 12th June
10am start at the parking for Mitchell's Fold (signposted on a corner), with a packed lunch. First The Whetstones Cairn and site of Stone Circle (just in Powys), then a 5 mile circular walk taking in Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle with associated cairn and outlier, site of the Druid's Castle stones nearby, Stapeley Hill Earthworks (Bronze Age field system and cross dykes), The Cow Stone, Stapeley Hill Cairn, look for a couple barrows on The Rowls, The Hoarstones Stone Circle, and a look for the Giant's Grave - remains of a possible dolmen on the east of Stapeley Hill subject to getting permission. A sizeable part of the walk can be omitted by returning to cars from Stapeley Hill, then driving to The Hoarstones.

Good rail links to Church Stretton or Shrewsbury, with a bus service from Shrewsbury to Bishops Castle, via White Grit, or The Shropshire Hills Shuttles Service.

Note: Not that long to go now! The landowner of the Giant's Cave / Grave has given permission for the Megalithic Meets group to view the feature - possibly Shropshire's only chambered tomb; permission to view the site of The Whetstones Circle and Cairn is pending. Please contact Shropshire Traveller if you intend to come, and have not done so yet.
