Country: United States Mississippian incised stone tablets (1000-1500 AD)originally excavated in the late 19th and the 20th centuries are thought to hold unique clues to the mound building societies of the American Midwest. The attached article describes information published about these tablets. One of the tablets have been missing for years and its current whereabouts are a continuing mystery. Story of the search and descriptions of tablets.

One of the tablets whose whereabouts are known came from this site in Castillian Springs, TN.

I am really disturbed by all of the unwarranted conjecture about staging false searches for artifacts that are really not missing and other such contrived nonsense. did anyone consider the Researchers treasure trove the Field Museum in Chicago. There is so many things uncatalogued in their third floor storage area that almost anything could be found.

I fail to see the "importance" of this slab, as it does (according to the drawing) depict "bird's headed masks", of which the "Eagle Dancer" is noted for in Mound Builder iconography. And of course in a less sophisticated manner of an "earlier date". Either that or it's a "shill deal" trying to gain attention for some pseudo-artifact. and like other "artifacts" to gain the public's attention is conveniently "missing". I wonder if the "search-person" actually has the amount of money stated to recover this "artifact" ???

    Small amount of some additional information here.
    Are the two figures "bird's heads" or something else? I'm certainly no SCC expert, but the sketch of the slab (and how good a sketch is it?) doesn't look like the various "Eagle Men" (Cahokia) or Tennessee figures in bird-disguise (paint or tatoo) that I've seen before.
    I take it that you suspect that the location is already known and someone is merely prepping the market for when the slab is "re-discovered?"

      You are 100 % correct, on both the iconography, and the "search", to me it's always "conveniently missing objects" that somehow just don't seem to fit within the culture their attributed to. and therefore cannot be scientifically studied. and no real determination made as to their authenticity. Either that or someone has a great collection of these so called missing artifacts. It reminds me of the Lenape Stone, from Pennsylvania, which had much more provenance, and additional finds to back up the claim, however still "missing".

        Okay -- but if the stone is never "recovered" this is all only a curious story; what would the point of the "search" if it were bogus? And if the stone suddenly shows up (for sale at a hefty price) but not made available for any research, then the possibility of the "search" being a stunt may be borne out.
        Time will tell.
        Having said this, the Tennessee State Museum has the "Thurston" stone (whose background is not in question) and several other interesting specimens on display. Anyone visiting downtown Nashville can spend an interesting hour or two examining the collection.
