Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar submitted by PaulM : The landscape around Landmannalaugar in the south of Iceland are a mix basalt lavaflows and multi-coloured rhyolitic hills. An amazing place to go. The campsite at the toe of the lavaflow in the foreground had natural hot pools - when you dug your fingers into the gravel they got burnt. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Mount Hekla, standing at nearly 5,000 feet high is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes. It was known to islanders as the "Gateway to Hell" - with good reason. When it erupted in 1159BC the effects were felt hundreds of miles away. In Scotland the whole of the west coast was devastated.

A sulphuric cloud of ash and acid rain fell on the land, a tsunami raced across the sea and the sun was hidden for years. Such an event immediately changed the lives of the inhabitants of what we now call Scotland and may well have permanently changed their way of life.
