Country: Belize Satellite imagery meshed with video-game technology is allowing University of Colorado at Boulder and NASA researchers to virtually "fly" along footpaths used by Central Americans 2,000 years ago on spiritual pilgrimages to ancestral cemeteries.

The effort has allowed researchers to trace the movements of ancient people in the Arenal region of present-day Costa Rica, who used single-file paths to navigate rugged terrain between small villages and cemeteries over the centuries, said CU-Boulder Professor Payson Sheets.

The evidence indicates people re-used the same processional routes for more than 1,000 years, returning to them despite periodic abandonment of villages caused by recurring violent eruptions of the nearby Arenal Volcano. This indicates that small rural culture supports cultural continuity in a way urbanized ancient societies did not.

Interesting. Reminds me of that path Dr. Lepper found, 60 km long, from the Newark Earthworks in Ohio to those at Chillicothe. I just ordered 3 Devereux books with money given me as a gift and I hope to be filled with new insights on this ind of thing soon!

I love this sentence in the article:
'The footpaths leading to the cemeteries seem to have been viewed by the ancient villagers as "living entities" '
I suspect there was a lot of that going on in previous cultures in relation to landscape features of different sorts.

    Lepper's Hopewell road appears very logical to me. It's a pity that so much physical evidence (hinted at the the writings of Evans and Squires) has been destroyed over the years.

Excellent find Bat. This is the sort of thing Paul Devereux goes on about as an 'explanation' for some ley line type beliefs.

    There's a long leap from a physical path to "ley lines" (at least as I understand them,) but yes, I can see the connection. The thing that fasinates me is the continuity of use.
