Lakeland's ancient industrial sites are to be pilots for a new system of protecting Britain's heritage. The landscapes of Langdale and Scafell hold some of the most important relics of stone age industry in the country. The area's Neolithic cave deposits have no official protection, although they are in a national park.

Now English Heritage wants to take positive steps to protect them in a move which could form the blueprint for future preservation of archaeology.

Proposals for the new system have been drawn up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Langdale and Scafell show evidence of Neolithic axe factories and are in a so-called Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA).

Prehistoric sites

Difficult management issues include the threat of erosion from fell walkers.

John Darlington, National Trust area manager for the South Lakes, said: "The Neolithic axe factories of Great Langdale and Scafell Pike are some of the most remarkable industrial sites in Britain.

"They also represent a considerable management challenge.

"Dramatically located amongst the high fells of the central Lake District these internationally important prehistoric sites are vulnerable to erosion and disturbance.

"We welcome being involved in a pilot project which will support the trust in its aim to protect and enhance the historic environment, and which seeks to introduce greater flexibility into the process."

Andrew Davison, English Heritage inspector of ancient monument for the North West, said: "While maintaining the present levels of statutory protection, the aim of the new system is to change the culture of protecting the historic environment."

ANCIENT LAKE DISTRICT SITES TO GET PROTECTION

ONE of the most historic industrial sites in Britain, which can be found in the heart of the Lake District, is to be used as part of a pilot scheme to find new ways to protect our heritage.

The Neolithic remains dotted around the Lakes, where evidence of the beginnings of civilisation can be found, are constantly under attack from the hordes of walkers and climbers who pass over them.

But English Heritage now hopes to find new ways of protecting and enhancing such sites and it has decided to use the Scafell and Langdale Neolithic sites to find out exactly how to do it.

At present, listed buildings, ancient monuments and historic parks, gardens and battlefields are governed by different rules but English Heritage wants to simplify them under one system.

The mountain ranges and caves used in the pilot are a haven for scattered flint and there is also evidence of Neolithic axe factories where man first began making primitive tools and weapons 6,500 years ago – none of which are currently protected.

Andrew Davison, of English Heritage, said: “These sites are vulnerable because people walk over them every day and they are heavily grazed. But they are still here after thousands of years so we need to strike a balance.

“We are looking at several other heritage sites around Britain, including the London Underground, and because they are all so varied it is quite a challenge to try to make one set of rules for them all.

“Hopefully, the project will be completed early next year. We can then collate the results and begin the consultation process with site owners and occupiers.”
