Pagan couple move 'prehistoric' stone circle into suburban home

John and Suky Burton imported the 13 prehistoric stones from their former Weymouth mansion when they downsized to a detached house in Dorchester last weekend. A pagan couple who moved into a suburban estate in Dorset brought with them their own prehistoric stone circle.

The stone circle megalith was originally erected in the grounds of Abbotts Court by Burberry fashion house founder Thomas Burberry in the early 1900s.

The Burtons bought the mansion in the 1980s and could not live without the monoliths when they downsized to Dorchester.

Neighbours watched in bewilderment as druid John and hereditary witch Suky used a crane and a huge truck to transport the 6ft stones to their new abode.

The couple - both antique dealers - aligned the stones at special points along a powerful ley line around the garden to encircle themselves with positive energy.

Suky, 60, then invited 20 witches from her coven to dedicate the stone circle during a special night-time ritual.

Mrs Burton - whose mother and grandmother were witches - said: "We had a blessing of the stones and we brought the energy back.

"You could feel the energy circling the stones. We feel they are a place between worlds. It's hard to describe the feeling you get when you are near these stones - but it is something extremely powerful.

"You can feel the energy pulsing around you, moving inside you, you feel at one with nature and get a real high."

The full history of the 13 ancient stones is unknown, however, they are reputed to have originated from Portland, Dorset.

They were purchased early last century by fashion giant Thomas Burberry - who placed them outside his Abbotts Court mansion, in Weymouth.

The couple - who teach magic and witchcraft - uncovered the stone circle shortly after they bought Abbotts Court in 1980 and planned to leave it as an historic landmark when they downsized.

But the property developer who bought the mansion threatened to dump the monoliths if they were left behind.

Spooky Suky in the suburbs by Andy B on Wednesday, 03 December 2008

coldrum found this in the Bristol paper:

Pagans John and Suky Burton knew their suburban garden needed a little something to bring it to life… so they imported in a prehistoric stone circle, aligned it with a ley line and invited a coven of witches to the dedication.

Now the energy is positively pulsing in the garden at their detached house home at 22 Queen's Avenue, Dorchester, Dorset.

Suky, a hereditary witch, and John, a druid for more than 30 years, are sure the circle, which they brought from their former home in nearby Weymouth, will be a positive influence and force for good.

The ancient history of the 13 mossy chunks is lost but they are reputed to have originated from Portland. Early last century they were bought by a member of the Burberry family for their mansion, Abbotts Court, overlooking Radipole Lake at Weymouth.

Thomas Burberry, founder of the famous clothing firm lived at Abbotts Court during World War I.

When Mr and Mrs Burton bought Abbotts Court in 1980, they discovered the stone circle in the overgrown grounds, together with a large collection of fossils. When they moved to the house in Dorchester the took the stones with them.

Now they have set up the circle in alignment with a powerful ley line which runs from Maiden Castle, the great iron age hill fort which overlooks Dorchester through to Maumbury rings, a Neolithic henge a few minutes walk on the other side of the town.

Mrs Burton, 60, whose grandmother and mother were witches, has practised as a witch all her life. She teaches magic and witchcraft and has an international reputation in the pagan community.

Some 20 witches from her coven attended the night-time dedication ceremony at the stone circle's new location.

She said: "We had a blessing of the stones and we brought the energy back. You could feel the energy circling the stones. We feel they are a place between worlds.

"Paganism is not a religion but a way of life. It is difficult to explain, but for us they represent living and dying, and they are very powerful. We belong to the earth and feel at one with them."

The prehistoric circle's arrival at the house by lorry was equally dramatic, however the garden is surrounded by walls and trees and now no one passing by would have any idea of what lies behind them.

A large room in the Burtons' house is set up as a temple, with chalices, ornamental swords and even a replica mummy from a Madam Tussaud's display.

A hereditary witch is one who is born into a tradition of esoteric origin. These traditions are often not recorded but rely primarily on oral and physical tradition.

A crane? You mean they didn't use the secrets of the ancients to levitate them into place?

It would seem this is a much larger issue than just the legality of removing ancient monuments, for private purposes. Since various museums also have been known to purloin these sacred sites, under the guise of "protection", currently the Turoe Stone in Eire is under such a threat, where again it's removal, first from Feerwore in it's original setting to the lawn of the farmhouse in Turoe, now certain bodies want to remove it again for it's "protection" to some museum- Why not re-install this incredible monument, back to it's place of origin- with a protective edifice to cover it, and keep it's "sanctity" intact- Or is it that one can get more fees from those who want to see it in some dusty museum ??? Will Greed win out ?? Stay tuned.

Since they were removed from Portland, why hasn't their been any enquiry- as to the legality of removing an ancient monument for private use ?? No matter how many individuals were involvred, And since no one can prove their provenance, is this to be the case with removal of any stones from ancient sites ??? If so we may be witnessing large amounts of our heritage disappearing before our very eyes, and winding up in some other "witches house".

Dont know about moving them whoever did originally? i only know of a few people that have deigned to move megaliths from their chosen spot and ill luck and negative lives have haunted them since, so be it, they ve chosen too. If moving them has stopped them being dumped then that may be alright, but with all things in anarchistical actions, consequences will follow.

    Reading the article clearly states

"The stone circle megalith was originally erected in the grounds of Abbotts Court by Burberry fashion house founder Thomas Burberry in the early 1900s".
