A new book investigating the myth of Atlantis says that the mythical land was actually the island of Ireland. The claim is made by geologist Ulf Erlingsson in his book 'Atlantis from a Geographer’s Perspective: Mapping the Fairy Land', who is to visit Ireland on August 11 to 13.

The Atlantean capital can be connected with Tara, the legendary seat of the high king of Ireland.

My new book also explores these ideas and sites, and concludes that the story of Atlantis may come from a compilation of sites that include Iberia, Santorini, Crete, and Ireland.

Legend tells how the great kingdom of atlantis sank beneath the sea in a day and night. Obviously, this is not the case with ireland. However there is evidence that ireland was subject to tsunami at some point.

There are many misconceptions here so let me clear some of them out.

1. Publishing a book about Atlantis is not a way of making neither a name nor money. The topic is so anathema that it is almost a guaranteed career destroyer, why it takes extreme guts to publish a book like this. Furthermore, go to Amazon and check out the prices of Atlantis books. They typically sell for well under a dollar. Make money? Yeah, right...

2. The modern Anglo-Saxon idea of Atlantis is a modern myth, inspired by Donnelly, Blavatsky, and occult clarvoyant nonsense. When many dismiss this scientific study they do so because they are victims of that myth, and have not checked out what Atlantis really is about (Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias). Atlantis was not some utopian, peaceful advanced civilisation. It was a military empire that subdued other peoples, and eventually was defeated when they had attacked the entire Middle East (sounds familiar?).

3. Another common myth is that Stone Age man was primitive. In reality they were just as intelligent as we. (Atlanticists believe the Atlanteans were more advanced than we, while the rest of mankind was primitive. Many scholars erroneously believe in the myth that they were primitive, but dismiss Atlantis. All available data as well as logic suggests, though, that they were just as we, all of them, for tens of thousands of years.)

I doubt it, but it`s a good way of making a name and some money and provides us all with something to debate in the pub

I don't know enough to support or refute the theory, but I do know that there is folk memory of a lost land in Ireland. It was called Hy-Brasil and was located in the Atlantic.

In his book "Ireland - A Journey Into Lost Time", P.A. Ó Síochán says that knowledge of a lost land is "inherent all through Celtic literature and history".

Yeah, right.

Perhaps the book explains how people in Ireland would have known anything at all about a floodwave in a sea hundreds of miles across the other side of another country? Not that I shall be spending money on this speculative rubbish just to find out.

Atlantis, the legendary island nation over whose existence controversy has raged for thousands of years, was actually Ireland, according to a new theory by a Swedish scientist. Atlantis, the Greek philosopher Plato wrote in 360 BC, was an island in the Atlantic Ocean where an advanced civilization developed some 11,500 years ago until it was hit by a cataclysmic natural disaster and sank beneath the waves.

Geographer Ulf Erlingsson, whose book explaining his theory will be published next month, says the measurements, geography, and landscape of Atlantis as described by Plato match Ireland almost exactly.

"I am amazed no one has come up with this before, it's incredible," he told Reuters.

"Just like Atlantis, Ireland is 300 miles long, 200 miles wide, and widest across the middle. They both have a central plain surrounded by mountains.

This book claims that Ireland is Atlantis because it is the same size as Atlantis. It also claims that the legend is a memory of the inundation of the Dogger Bank. Now have I got it wrong, but didn't Atlantis sink beneath the (Atlantic?) ocean ? Isn't Ireland still above water? Isn't the Dogger Bank outside the Thames estuary, nowhere near Ireland and certainly not in the Atlantic? Is this "theory" meant to be taken seriously?

    Well, traditionally the Irish connection with Atlantis has been through the mysterious sunken island of Hy Brassil, said to be visible once every seven years from the west coast of Ireland and located way out in the Atlantic. I've never heard it said that Ireland WAS Atlantis.

    This is certainly a radical theory, but the man is apparently an expert!

    Thorgrim, it is not a "theory" - obviously - but an hypothesis. An hypothesis only raises in the grades to become a theory when it has been tested a number of times, and survived each test.

    Your post is somewhat illogical in my eyes. You mention the inundation of Dogger Bank, and then you wonder why Ireland is still above the water. Did you already forget about Dogger Bank? (Hint: Is Dogger Bank still above the surface?)

    As regards Dogger Bank not being in the Atlantic, trust me, it is. You see, the Atlantic is an ocean, and the North Sea is a marginal sea that forms part of the Atlantic Ocean. That's how geographer's veiw it. However, since the sinking was a contamination according to the hypothesis, it is irrelevant anyhow.

    BTW, the book can now be ordered on line at Lindorm Publishing, so we can all read for ourselves how serious it is.
