Mellor Hillfort
Mellor Hillfort submitted by PaulM : The one third-scale constructed round house at the Mellor Iron Age hillfort site. Students from the nearby college built the structure which as it turns could well be located close to the location of the original round houses. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Archaeological Dig at The Old Vicarage, Mellor, near Stockport will once again be open to the public this weekend on Saturday and Sunday between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm. An entry fee of £3.00 for adults and 50p for children will be charged with all proceeds in aid of the Mellor Archaeological Trust. The hillfort is of great archaeological significance, being the only one in Greater Manchester.

For further details see the website.

Note: Photos from this year's excavations are in the eGallery

We've just spent a fantastic afternoon there - a lot to see and do for everyone including a chance for the kids to have a go at metal detecting. As well as the trenches from this year's excavations and guided tours of the site, there are displays of geophysics, dowsing, a reconstructed roundhouse and finds from the hillfort itself and other prehistoric sites in the area such as the Ludworth Intake and Brown Low barrows. A guide book of the excavations from 1998 to present is available as well as a video about Ancient Mellor.
