Portal regulars will know that we 'collect' daft tributes to Stonehenge from around the world, although it has to be said that most emanate from across the Atlantic! We have had Carhenge, Truckhenge, Foamhenge, Soaphenge and Toilethenge (use our search box to find these if you're interested), and here goes with the latest, Boathenge.

Every year hundreds of thousands of people visit the pre-historic ruins of Stonehenge outside of Salibury, England. Tens of thousands travel to western Nebraska to take in the majesty of "Carhenge."

One Ocean City businessman (Maryland, USA) is looking to tap into the market with the resort's own twist on a Stonehenge replica.

Joe Kro-Art, owner of Ocean Gallery World Center on the Boardwalk at Second Street, is proposing to create "Boathenge" on the Ocean City beach outside his store. The monument would be similar to "Carhenge" with 38 boats forming a structure in the image of Stonehenge.

My goodness ... they have t-shirts, too.

Here is the approximate location, near the Little Bonne Femme Creek on the Missouri River.

Dear Megalithic,

Regarding the comment post: Oh no, it's.... Boathenge!
by Andy B on Tuesday, 07 August 2007

Here is some news from the Maryland USA Bay Weekly News

8/20/2007: In Ocean City, it’s too late to build the world’s first Boathenge — whether or not businessman Joe Kro-Art’s proposal to raise 38 boats in a Stonehenge-like circle on the beach wins the approval of the Army Corps of Engineers, who’ve been asked by town officials to evaluate the promotional idea. Maryland’s been scooped by Missouri, where...Boathenge already exists along the Missouri River near Columbia...

BoatHenge is down on our farm in Easley, Missouri (near Columbia) along the bank of the Missouri River bordering the cross-state Katy bicycle trail.

" 'This is a PR battleship. It gives Ocean City the power other resorts don't have,' he said."

I can hardly wait ... If I'm ever in Ocean City, I'll stop. Here is where it may be built:

At least they are refreshingly open about the benefits of the publicity and the whole purpose of doing it, unlike us Brits who find such things too seedy to admit to. It's Homer Simpson at Cerne Abbas all over again. If I'm ever in Ocean City please shoot me and put me out of my misery...
