Rev. Richard Thomas speaking at ASLaN 2000
Rev. Richard Thomas speaking at ASLaN 2000 submitted by Andy B : Speaker at ASLaN Conference 2000 (Vote or comment on this photo)
BBC Radio 4 Sunday programme item: New Age and the Vatican. A new document from the Vatican is urging Catholics to stop experimenting with what it thinks are cranky alternative lifestyles.

Rome wants to stop Catholics being "led astray" by the growing popularity of New Age spiritualism. Is there anything truly incompatible between Christianity and New Age Spirituality? Roger discusses this with Moira Doorly who writes for the Catholic Herald and converted to Catholicism from what she calls a 'sort of New Age Paganism', and by the Rev. Richard Thomas, Communications Officer for the Anglican Bishop of Oxford, who has taken leave to study Paganism.

What a total fiasco – most people would have been jailed but coz he had the 'backing' of the leading clergy he walks away! Clerical damage limitation is an utter sham just look at the Vatican/perverts issue recently exposed on panorama

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Tuesday, 31 October 2006
At the trial yesterday, the Judge said that what Richard had done was "a million miles" (his phrase) from the source of the material on his computer and from harm to children. The judge also paid tribute to the fact that when Richard realised he had illegal material on his computer he destroyed it. I believe he said "You recognised in your distress that something needed to be done."
The BBC describes the downloading of illegal material as "inadvertent".

To comment without showing any awareness of what the judge said seems ill advised.

"What would you want them to do, oh great self-righteous anonymous one? It sounds like he's going to be in prison for a bit so not mixing with the PF."

No worries mate - with their previous fluffy record of trusting anyone who smiles at them nicely it wont be long before they discover another leading missionay activist to swap beads with them!

Aint they just great and what would us pagans and occultists do without such fabulous representation?

I think you've just demonstrated how various pagan factions were out to discredit Richard Thomas well before any of this porn business came along. You've still not explained a 'fluffy' pagan from a 'wellard' pagan (which presumably you consider yourself to be). We may be megaraks but we're not very up on pagan-spotting, you'll have to explain...

'Tis obvious, Andy. "Wellard" is us, and "Fluffy" is them!

An interesting comment was left on my blog, which noted that he'd been evangelising on a gay forum, and implied that the link to the illegal material which he'd followed had been sent to him as a result of this. I haven't been able to find any other reference to this, but I have to admit of a feeling of schadenfreude if he had, in fact, been hassling gays.

"The next time a C of E type comes along with good intentions,"

ARE YOU FOR REAL OR JUST A CLOSET MISSIONARY PLAYING GAMES ON HERE????

"Good intentions" you ARE pulling me leg yes? Dont you understand what evangelism is all about - what it means? MISSION (for the hard of thinking MISSION equates with 'gaining converts' for JC) to all other faiths! Still doesnt sink in? Good intentions' mean missionary intentions. It's not that hard to understand really for most people with a brain.

Silly, or should I say incredibly 'naive'? You just answered your own question. How can any person be so trusting, how can anyone be so easy to take it? I really dont think that people like you will ever get it - that IS unless you actually are a missionary hiding behind the stones!

I just cannot believe that anyone can be so easy to take in, it's rather comical really!

"not mixing with the PF"

Oh yeah - ha ha! Are you certain of that? Dont you think if he does go down that the good 'ol PF will be able to resist sending in some friendly, 'rosary bead - for - pentacles' plastic interfaith pagan prison chaplain to listen to his sob sob story about why he was done for looking at thoses nasty pics on his PC?

Are you for real?

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Monday, 25 September 2006
For a start please get off your high horse - he was proudly exibited as the best thing since slice bread by the plastic xtian PF interfaith lobby and others like yours truly and the truth is rather differant, is it not? Somehow I feel the PF's powers of 'discernment' leave plenty to be be desired. How many fluffy pagan gatherings was this evangelist invited to by naive and trusting idiots like... ?

Grow up man!

Already posted that link. OK - mental note to myself. The next time a C of E type comes along with good intentions, write him off as a potential paedophile. Right got that, thanks for your analysis. Or shall I extend that to any 'person of faith' as how do I know they are not all as bad as each other?

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Monday, 15 November 2004
Oh how naïve New-Agers and untutored Wiccan types flock to the influence of the Church like lemmings into the sea.

Leading activists in the Church of England, who are behind this missionary push, have already CLEARLY said that they want to use the information that Thomas is collecting via his Church-funded Wiccan studies to help them spread THEIR ‘good’ word. That is the purpose of his close interest in the occult!

Of course, any genuine Pagan with half a brain would realise this already. You don’t have to be a theological genius to know that the Christian Church has one main aim which it spends its financial resources on and that is seeking to evangelise the un-churched masses. Of course Thomas is just doing what his theocratical bosses ask him to do and that is spread the biblical message.

Sadly, many thickos in the pagan movement will fall for this information-collecting based church ploy as they always do. And it benefits that Church to have a nice and friendly...

So you have never heard the term EVANGELISM?

How do you think it starts?

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Monday, 15 November 2004
Eh yes, 'Evangelism' is the sole aim of the C of E and other Churches so well of course all info gleaned by its priests about pagans will be used to further this theocratical agenda.

Yep - the CofE bossses have already stated that they want to use his studies/info about pagans to spread 'their' biblical word. Let's face it - that's their job.

Very dodgy indeed! PF must live in Cuckoo land!

Well yes it is now. At the time I wrote the comment, nearly two years ago, there was no informaition to go on. What I was aware of was a movement by some Pagans (and Christians) who were actively trying to discredit him. It appears he didn't need their help but could manage on his own!

After yesterday's hearing Thomas said: "I admit I am addicted to adult pornography but I have never deliberately downloaded images of children."

Extraordinaily, there is a megalithic angle to this story, the Oxford Mail reports that "On the day he made (downloaded) the images, Thomas joined revellers at Stonehenge to celebrate the summer solstice."

Oh damage limitation eh? Andy B = naive, trusting, gullible and so on and so forth now?

Just like 90% of the rest of the plastic christian PF pagan community! Sad - but true!

How long before they invite yet another nice grinning "BIG SOFTIE" church mole into their happy trusting little pseudo-pagan throng though!

What IS your point in this screed? Is it Andy's job to protect the pagans from the rising Christian tide? (Hey -- about 1600 years too late!) Or are the users of this site supposed to use our supernatural powers to deduce secret criminal activity in others?

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Thursday, 11 November 2004
Christian Fifth Column Takes Over PF. Coup planned to take place at November's annual conference.

Odinists, Seax Wiccans and Dionysian Pagans Beware – PAN prophecies have become fact - using their interfaith gambit as a Trojan Horse the Christo-pagan junta in the PF are re-profiling the federation to exclude genuine paganism!

The unbelievable will happen at this year's PF conference in Croydon on November 27 - A hard-line fundamentalist agitator who has a long history of seeking to overturn Paganism has been invited as a guest speaker to drive a wedge into our movement.

The people who run the PF are perfectly aware of who this man is because we have publicly castigated them for liaising with him in the past.

Only one explanation for this-the church now sees Paganism as a serious threat, for the first time in centuries. That calls for a resounding cheer !

Re: Rev. Richard Thomas on Radio 4 by Anonymous on Saturday, 22 May 2004
Maybe more than one explanation. It could simply be that the Church is more open to thinking about the nature and spirituality of creation, and the contribution being made by Pagans to that thinking today!
