Council staff pulled down Lincoln's own unauthorised Stonehenge after branding it "illegal and unsafe".
As reported in yesterday's Echo, a pagan stone circle was put up in the city's Boultham Park on Sunday night.
Paul Blades and Gary Turner, who are pagans, took it upon themselves to build the shrine after undergoing an out-of-body experience on the spot 10 years ago.

But council officers removed all 13 stones on Monday afternoon, a mere six hours after they had been painstakingly put in place.
Lincoln City Council's open spaces officer Dave Charysz said the authority had no choice but to remove the unofficial shrine.
"It was necessary to remove the stones immediately as they were potentially a hazard for park users," he said.
"The stones were very heavy and only lightly secured in the ground. As stated previously the stones were erected without the knowledge or authority of the council."
But dog walker Sue Blunt (33), who was one of the first people to spot the circle on Monday morning, thought the shrine was the perfect addition to the park.
"The council ripped out all the stones and I think it's terrible," she said. "It looked really amazing and there was no danger whatsoever. They should have been left there. I wouldn't be surprised if they came back again one day."
Echo reader Leigh Blades agreed: "The council should replace the stones and give all cultures and faiths the same opportunities. I saw the stones and thought they were very well erected and looked very professional."

Re: PAGANS' BATTLE VOW OVER CIRCLE OF FAITH by Anonymous on Wednesday, 13 June 2007
ANY PHOTOS of the circle taken please, from this I can tell if the out of body experience was genuine or not, since this site could be ancient sacred ground, and the chap was just following his natural instinct to build the site that might have stood there before? My experience of these situations show sometimes we are drawn to return a once ancient site to how it might have looked thousands of years ago, it happens to me all the while, AND I DONT DRINK or take drugs. If the place is ancient sacred ground there, he is JUST following his natural instincts plain and simple. The question perhaps we should ask is if he wanted to build a Christian Church there would he be threatened I wonder by the council, or would they have a quiet word in the ear to warn him off, something they could have done either way I imagine given they have a brain? mmike.

I live in Lincoln and followed this story over the few days in which it ran (Including readers letters). Some of the park users who saw the standing stones wrote to the Lincolnshire Echo and remarked at how saddened they were to find that the stones had been removed after only a short time. I don't believe there was a single letter in protest against them. Anyone having visited Lincoln recently will undoubtedly know of the monstrosities that are being erected - residences, commercial buildings and works of art (?!). This feature was one which was both symbolic of the symbiosis of humanity and nature, and representational of the journey humanity has made from its hominid roots. Not only this, in just a few short hours of its existence, it also represented a place of worship and a place for reflection. It provided a small sanctuary for those who sought solace. As a work of art, it was sympathetically emplaced. Removing the stones was a sacrilege act, shame on Lincoln City Council.

Out-of-body experiences are pretty easy and no big deal, if you're into self-hypnosis, meditation or hallucinogens. One's interpretation of it is always culturally based.

My point of interest in this tale is the reson the two fellows give for erecting the circle there. "Mr Blades, who has been a pagan for more than 10 years, set up the miniature stone circle in Boultham Park after he and Mr Turner had an out-of-body experience there."

The idea that some stones were placed at spots where people had extraordinary experiences is worth looking at.

PAGANS' BATTLE VOW OVER CIRCLE OF FAITH by coldrum on Monday, 11 June 2007

Members of a national pagan group will visit Lincoln to fight the corner of a man who put up a stone circle in a city park.

The Reverend Martin Hazel, who runs the iPagan website, said he was disgusted to read stories about Paul Blades, who put up a stone circle in Boultham Park last week.

Within days the stones were taken down by Lincoln City Council and Mr Blades was threatened with eviction from his council home.

But Mr Hazel, from Burnley, Lancashire, who is also a member of the national Pagan Federation, said the council's actions were unfair and he wants to tell its leaders of his disgust.

"Someone posted a copy of the Echo story about Mr Blades' circle on my website and I was shocked when I saw it," he said. "I can't believe that the council could do this. I am now speaking to some of my colleagues about the possibility of us travelling to Lincoln to speak to the council about their decision to take the circle down.

"They need to take other councils as examples. Where I used to live, in Northwick Park, London, the local council actually helped people in the area to erect a stone circle in the middle of a roundabout."

He said that they wish to fight the corner of Lincoln's pagans who have every right to put up a stone circle if that is what they wish.

"The council said this circle was unsafe, but I can't see how that is possible. From the pictures I can see the stones were not that big and were placed quite well."

Mr Blades (33), from Lincoln, who built the circle with his friend Gary Turner, said he was thrilled that Mr Hazel wanted to help him.

"When we built the circle we knew the council wouldn't like it and would probably take it down, but we did it to prove a point," he said.

"We think it is only fair that we should be able to demonstrate our beliefs in this way. So I'm very excited by the fact that someone wants to help us fight the council on this one. It's a brilliant step."

He said he understands if the original circle was unsafe - all he wants is the council to support the idea.

"What I want is to draw attention to what is going on and would love for them to help us put up a permanent circle that is safe," he said.

PAGAN'S EVICTION THREAT OVER PARK STONE CIRCLE by coldrum on Monday, 11 June 2007

PAGAN'S EVICTION THREAT OVER PARK STONE CIRCLE

A Pagan who erected a stone circle in Lincoln has been warned that he could be evicted from his home.

Paul Blades put up a miniature stone circle in Boultham Park with his friend Gary Turner.

First the council ripped down their stones, then Mr Blades, his partner and their four children were threatened with eviction from their council house.

Mr Blades, who has been a pagan for more than 10 years, set up the miniature stone circle in Boultham Park after he and Mr Turner had an out-of-body experience there.

His partner Sue Ledbury, who lives off Newport, Lincoln, said she was shocked and angry when a letter arrived from the council threatening them with an eviction notice.

She said: "I couldn't believe it when the letter arrived this morning.

"We have been council tenants for 14 years and we have never had any problems at all.

"We may have different beliefs to other people but all Paul has done is expressed our...
