Neolithic and Bronze AgeFollowing the recent BBC TV documentary on the top treasures held in the British Museum two Scottish archaeologists have announced their top Scottish treasures Scotland on Sunday reports. The BBC’s top ten contained only one Scottish treasure - the Isle of Lewis Chessmen - but according to TV archaeologists Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver (from ‘Two Men in a Trench’) the Smerrick Neolithic stone axes discovered in 1881 are the most important find in Scottish archaeology.
The axes (now located in the National Museum of Scotland) were found by Victorian drain diggers and appear never to have been used.
Other prehistoric items in the top ten include the Rotten Bottom Bow dating back to the Mesolithic, a hoard of 28 Bronze Age spearheads from Lesmahagow, an Iron Age musical instrument (the Deskford Carynx) and a jet necklace found in a grave on the Isle of Bute.
