'The First Artists' takes the reader back 100,000 years to Blombos Cave where shells loaded as a palette with pigment speaks to decorating, and later ocher blocks were found with scratched patterns. More recent locations and artifacts visited are Indonesian handprint rockart 40,000 years old, and the luminous wall paintings of Chauvet. 'Tracking the First Americans' describes the discovery of the nearly intact remains of 'Naia' the unfortunate teenager who fell to her death 12,000 to 13,000 years ago in Mexico's Hoyo Negro cave. A useful and clear double page map graphic shows sites where not the remains, but the artifacts and activities of the earliest Americans have been discovered. The sites with the clearest evidence are indicated and visited, including Monte Verde - 14,500 - 14,250 years ago, and Paisley Caves - 14,350 years ago.
