Mystery over Cotwold Iron Age finds

Iron Age and Later Prehistory

<< News >>

Rumours that ancient remains have been unearthed at the site of a 97 home development near Moreton in the Cotwolds has been reported by This Is The Cotswolds.

Developers and archaeologists are remaining tight-lipped over the discovery but many townspeople believe that Iron and Bronze age discoveries, including the remains of a roundhouse, have been unearthed.

Guy Stapleton, of Moreton History Society, said that if the rumours proved founded, the early history of Moreton would have to be rethought.

"These discoveries would push the age of Moreton back by at least 1,000 years and possibly considerably more," he said. Until now nothing pre-dating the Roman occupation has been found near the town.

Cotswold Archaeological Trust is undertaking investigations on behalf of developer, Crest Nicholson.

Townspeople who have spoken to archaeologists at the site report that roundhouse post holes, a piece of flint from East Anglia and a previously undiscovered riverbed are among the finds being investigated.

However, the trust refused to make any comment. A statement released by Crest Nicholson did little more than confirm that an investigation was under way. "Once the result of this survey has been confirmed, Crest Nicholson will work hand in hand with the local archaeologist to ensure that the appropriate action is taken."

"The fact that they are saying nothing does seem to suggest they have found something," added Mr Stapleton.
