Move to flatten problem 'red light' hill

A hill in Coventry, believed to be the site of a prehistoric burial ground, could be flattened if an unusual idea to deter drug users and prostitutes gets public backing. A community group in Hillfields is asking for people's views about the future of Primrose Hill, in Primrose Hill Park.

It is claimed that families aren't using the park because drug addicts and prostitutes sometimes meet by the hill.

One option could be to get rid of the landmark altogether.

Co-ordinators of Watch (Working Actively to Change Hillfields) want to consult residents across Hill-fields, to see whether people would like to keep the hill, or flatten or somehow restructure it.

John Shannon, of Watch, said: "We do have the odd problem by the hill. People have been known to find syringes and used condoms.

"Obviously, there are a lot of young children in Hillfields and we want young families to be able to use the park without worrying about what they might find.

"If we were to flatten or restructure the hill, it would obviously help that problem, but if people would prefer to keep it, then that's what we'll do.

"It is an open consultation and we just want to hear people's views."

Watch co-ordinators are working with the city council and Phoenix Area Co-ordination to encourage residents to decide the future of the hill.

But Coventry historian and Evening Telegraph columnist David McGrory said he believed the hill should stay, as it could be sitting on the site of a prehistoric burial ground.

Mr McGrory, who writes our weekly Time Tunnel column, said: "Ancient burial grounds are known as giants' graves and we know there was one on Primrose Hill. We do not know 100 per cent that this hill is definitely the site, but they tend to be on mounds and that is the only place I can think it would be."

A city council spokesman said: "We are aware of the problems and are working closely with Watch about the future of the hill. Public consultation will be key to that process.

"In the meantime, we are exploring options and will be keeping residents informed."

It appears that the mound thought to be the Giant's Grave was excavated and found to be an early 20th century creation to replace the original. I recently discovered that the original mound which appears to have been a real burial mound was a few yards away and was buried under the newly created back gardens of Nicholls St at the turn of the 20th century.
