Local sites near Glastonbury are the starting point for this year’s Megalithomania conference, but distinguished researchers and authors from all over the world will be discussing their cutting-edge research into ancient civilisations and megalithic sites. From the jungles of Peru, to the temples of the South Pacific and from the mountains of New Zealand to the stones of Brittany, Megalithomania has gone global.

Glastonbury’s MEGALITHOMANIA Conference is now in it’s third year and is taking place in the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury on 17th & 18th May 2008. On the Friday (16th) before the event, local sites Stanton Drew and Stoney Littleton will be visited on a guided tour with local author Gordon Strong and archaeo-botanist Gordon Hillman, co-star of the Ray Mears Wild Food TV show on BBC2. On the following Monday, a private tour to Stonehenge will be led by David Furlong.

The keynote speaker for the event is David Hatcher Childress, well known for his groundbreaking research into ancient civilisations. He will be discussing his travels in South America and the Pacific.

Geomancer Hamish Miller will be presenting his research on The Stone People of New Zealand and Nicholas Mann & Philippa Glasson will be presenting their breakthroughs on the astro-archaeological alignments of Avalon and how the ancients understood precession of the equinoxes.

Other speakers include Tom Graves, who will be re-launching his classic work Needles of Stone, David Furlong will be walking in the footsteps of the ‘dod-man’ and examine how the megalith builders surveyed, measured and studied the landscape.

Special guests from Holland and America, Reinoud Du Jonge & Jay Wakefield have followed clues of a Neolithic maritime civilisation who left maps encoded within rock-art around the world. Author of Europe’s Lost Civilisation Peter Marshall, who travelled over 4,000 miles of Europe’s megalithic coastlines, will be pinpointing his favourite stories from his epic journey. See the website and posters for the full line-up.

There will be a Megalithic art gallery during the event curated by Antiquarian artist Kate Masters, including original paintings, photography and 3D pieces. There will be an exclusive preview of the new Standing with Stones film with producer Michael Bott; plus there will be several book launches and signings from some of the authors speaking at the event.

MEGALITHOMANIA is organised by Hugh Newman, Gareth Mills and John Martineau, who in late 2005 realised that the megaliths were not really being looked at by conferences in Britain. With a passion for visiting ancient sites and reading many books on the subject, the three of them dedicated themselves to organising the ultimate conference on megaliths.

Leaving no stone unturned, Megalithomania was created to shine a new light on the megalithic sciences and maintain a multidisciplinary forum to help unlock these mysteries. On the Sunday evening at the conference, a speakers forum will be joined by the earth mysteries pioneer and inspiration for the conferences name, John Michell, who published his classic Megalithomania Book in 1982.

The status quo does not immediately support new or radical theories, but a conference like this allows all angles of research to be explored. For example, in the early part of the last century, archaeoastronomy was fumbling to find its feet, but now it is now established that our ancestors were keen astronomers. Earth energy, once thought of as part of the dowsers’ overactive imagination, has recently been scientifically verified, documented and used by big business to improve seed production and fertility of crops. [Really? can you give your source for this please Hugh - MegP Ed] The study of sound at sacred sites, archaeoacoustics, is also becoming accepted in some pockets of academia with repeatable scientific study.

Although the old stones can seem like a stuffy and boring subject, the mysteries of our ancient relatives still retain their mystique. As we have seen, modern technology is verifying ‘radical’ theories and helping unlock some of the secrets of the megaliths. [Really? can you give your source for this please Hugh - MegP Ed] There is a new breed of Megalithomaniac, who don’t just want to measure, dig and record what they find. The subtleties of musical harmony, earth energies and altered states of consciousness are now being examined with an open mind, yet from a scientific perspective.

We should not hark back to the ancient way of life and pretend it was a ‘golden age’, but reopen the book of the past with reverence, respect and the knowledge that the builders of the megaliths were not savages, but possessed the same level of intelligence and compassion as we do today.

The conference takes place at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury on 17th & 18th May 2008. Field trips to Stanton Drew, Stoney Littleton, Stonehenge and Avebury will take place on the Friday and Monday. Tickets are £68 for the first 50 sold, then £80. Field trips are not included in the price. Call 01458 831800 for tickets or visit www.megalithomania.co.uk
and www.myspace.com/megalithomania. “All this excitement about a collection of battered old rocks and mounds of earth must be puzzling to those who have yet had no direct experience of Megalithomania”
John Michell , Megalithomania! 1982

Megalithomania Conference 2008, Glastonbury.

Back home, reeling again – not with the pint of Hobgoblin I have just consumed with my supper - but with pleasure from another amazing weekend with Megalithomaniacs.2008. This year I attended the conference, and the two Tours to local sites.

Well done Hugh and crew, this well attended conference in Glastonbury met entirely my high expectations, and it was evident that many others thought so too. Someone said at the intro that this conference was not from the academy – but I was struck by the rigour of the research, the professionalism of the presentations, and the genuine support and respect all the speakers showed each other. Most showed this by being there in the audience to hear each other’s revelations. And things were truly revealed.

Pyramids in Bosnia? I nearly went shopping – but am I so glad I stayed! These massive structures need the entire world’s attention, and Sam from Sarajevo deserves all the help we can offer him in his mighty task. I had heard a whisper about them in the Fortean Times, but I had not taken it seriously. Just ‘google’ for it, and you will see what we have seen; the largest man-made structures in the world. Equally enthralling and totally unknown to many of us were the Basalt Islands in the west pacific. I reckon myself to be quite informed on the world’s wonders, but these lectures left me mouthing quietly to myself, “how could I have missed knowing about these fantastic megaliths?”

Now I have to go to Bosnia, after I have been to the Basalt Islands, and Kate showed me parts of France I have missed. David persuaded me to look again at counties nearer to home, and Nick made me want to rush out and go up Windmill Hill just to feel his excitement from his personal discovery of the use of the Tor. Mind you, I’d have missed Sam from Sarajevo then.

We saw crystal skulls, and heard their stories. We were drawn into the web of local, national and international alignments, culminating with cosmic alignments of old, new and a hint of what is to come. I have a great personal interest in this area, and we were not disappointed. We heard about new discoveries from Michael and Peter, who demonstrated to us the importance of travelling for comparison purposes. And then there was Tom and Hamish – two men with the ability to be like overlords. I did not know whether to laugh or cry. They gave me confidence that my own work is valuable to the larger picture.

The trips to Stanton Drew, Stoney Littleton, Stonehenge and Avebury were friendly and informative. I know these sites well, but it is so much nicer to be in the company of like minds. The joy of being in the Henge in the blue of the morning sunny skies was heavenly, as was Frida singing for us. I had to leave, but only after Frida and I had laid a dead crow to rest in the roots of a tree at Avebury. A surreal end to a stunning weekend.

So many people are working very hard to recover old knowledge, and Hugh and his team know who they are, and have brought them to us. Just look at that line-up. What will they do next year? I am certainly going to be there to find out ….. after Bosnia, Peru, Mayenne, Malta…….

Crystal Skulls at Megalithomania by megalithomania on Tuesday, 06 May 2008

Press Release: ‘Mystery of the Crystal Skulls’ revealed at Megalithomania

The new Indiana Jones film is inspired by the discovery of a ‘Crystal Skull’ in the pyramids of South America, but did you know that the ‘real’ Mitchell-Hedges skull was said to have been discovered in a pyramid site called Lubaantum in Belize in the 1920’s. Several skulls have come to light since then and a legend of ’13 crystal skulls’ has become a popular story. The new film is based upon 'The Mystery of the Crystal Skulls', the bestselling 1997 book by Chris Morton and Ceri Louise Thomas, who have now agreed to come and present their research at Megalithomania. They will be joined by intrepid researcher Philip Coppens, who had a chance meeting with a friend of the family of the Mitchell-Hedges and was sworn to secrecy until after the death of Anna Mitchell-Hedges as to the origin of this incredible object. But now Coppens will be revealing the truth behind the discovery of one of the most important and mysterious artifacts ever discovered exclusively at the Glastonbury conference next weekend.

The Crystal Skulls are 'officially' forgeries, with some of them said to be manufactured in Germany in the 1800's, but there is one major flaw in that hypothesis. They date them from the time when spinning-wheels must have been used to make such a neat polish on the surface, a date relating to the 1800's onwards. But when we take another look at ancient Egyptian artifacts, we see the same kind of techniques and clues in the pieces themselves that date back over 5000 years . Quartz crystal cannot be dated by carbon testing or any other methods, so archaeologists only presume that they cannot be older than 200 years because that known technology did not officially exist before then. The most famous and beautifully carved is the Mitchell-Hedges skull, with other skulls at the British Museum and in Paris.

Crystal experts from HP laboratories found that the skull had been carved against the natural axis of the crystal. Modern crystal sculptors do not carve "against the grain," otherwise the piece could shatter, even with the use of lasers and sophisticated cutting methods. HP could find no microscopic scratches on the crystal suggesting it was not carved with steel instruments. The experts suggested that it was "roughly hewn out with diamonds, and then the detail work was meticulously done with a gentle solution of silicon sand and water". But this would have taken over 300 years to complete! They concluded that successfully crafting a shape as complex as the Mitchell-Hedges skull is "impossible", or as one HP researcher is said to have remarked, "The damned thing simply shouldn't be."

Granite is 55% quartz, therefore extremely hard, but in ancient Egypt vessels were cut, shaped and polished by minute super-fast blades and sanders, using perhaps diamond cutters and spinning wheels. Similar to the clues from the Mitchell-Hedges skull. Christopher Dunn (who will be speaking at Megalithomania next year), an engineer for 30 years concluded that they must have had advance machining techniques in antiquity, and the current theory that they used copper tools is absurd when dealing with rock as hard as granite. But it is not only Egypt that precision crystal cutting was in operation. Professor Robert Temple, who spoke at last years Megalithomania had discovered that magnifying lenses, telescopes, and optical surveying techniques existed from the time of Old Kingdom Egypt, with magnifying crystals known even in Predynastic times, circa 3300 BC. Over 400 ancient optical artifacts that were precision-ground or cast have been discovered all over the world by Professor Temple and some of them looked to have been worked by modern machining.

The mystery of the crystal skulls simply cannot be tucked away as German fakes. Modern science, nor Egyptologists accept the 'rock solid' facts that precision stone and crystal work were present in the megalithic era, so Megalithomania intends to put these cutting-edge ideas out in an open forum to be discussed and put under scrutiny from a line-up of international authors and scholars who specialize in finding out what the ancients were up to.

The keynote speaker for the event is a real-life Indiana Jones, David Hatcher Childress, who is well known for his exploratory research into ancient civilisations. He will be discussing his megalithic travels in South America and the Pacific. Other speakers include Nicholas Mann, Hamish Miller, Tom Graves & Peter Marshall. There are 13 talks, with a “megalith-forum” hosted by our special guest and the inspiration for the conference, John Michell.

The conference takes place at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury on 17th & 18th May 2008. Field trips to Stanton Drew, Stoney Littleton, Stonehenge and Avebury will take place on the Friday and Monday. Tickets are £80 or £45 day tickets. A small number of tickets to individual talks will be available on the door. Field trips are not included in the price. Call 01458 831800 for tickets or visit

Answering Editors questions... by megalithomania on Thursday, 01 May 2008

Hi 'Ed'. Surprised you do not know about this, but yes, there is evidence that modern technology (including the 'Dragon Project) has been used to test earth energy effects at megalithic sites. The book "Seed of Knowledge, Stone of Plenty" by John Burke & Kaj Halberg reports on many tests done at sacred sites regarding telluric earth energies & their effects on seeds. It was proven over & over again that those seeds placed in the most 'electric' spot of a megalithic site (mostly dolmens, but also stone circles, long barrows & pyramids), produced super-seeds that when planted, showed a massive increase in yield and grew up to 100% faster, compared to control samples. They were also frost-resistant and lasted longer. John Burke used this ancient technology to set up a agricultural business to help farmers reduce the use of chemicals, by having super-seeds. Forget GM, this is the way forward & the ancient sites still seem to function!! Hope that answers your questions Andy. Check out a talk I did at the 'Stars & Stones Forum' in Suffolk in November 2007 called - "Stone Age Survival - Earth Energies, Fertility and the Secrets of the Stones". It explains it in more detail. From Hugh Newman

Real-Life 'Indiana Jones’ join Conference & Crystal Skull truths to be revealed

With the release of the new Indiana Jones movie on May 22nd, Megalithomania are pleased to announce the addition of some real-life adventurers and explorers to the annual conference in Glastonbury on May 17th & 18th 2008. Unfortunately wild food expert Gordon Hillman, has pulled out due to ongoing illness, but in the spirit of the new Indiana Jones film (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), two respected speakers will be joining us at the event. Semir Sam Osmanagich, a Bosnian-American archaeologist, who discovered a complex of pyramids, megaliths and temples in central Bosnia will be detailing his latest finds, and prolific writer Philip Coppens will be presenting a world exclusive on the truth behind the Crystal Skulls.

The new Indiana Jones film is based upon the discovery of a ‘Crystal Skull’ in the pyramids of Central America, but did you know that the ‘real’ Mitchell-Hedges skull was said to have been discovered in a pyramid site called Lubaantum in Belize in the 1920’s. Several skulls have come to light since then and a legend of ’13 crystal skulls’ has become a popular story. But intrepid researcher Philip Coppens, had a chance meeting with a friend of the family of the Mitchell-Hedges and was sworn to secrecy until after the death of Anna Mitchell-Hedges. But now Coppens will be revealing the truth behind the discovery of one of the most important and mysterious artefacts ever discovered exclusively at Megalithomania.

Until 2005, Bosnia was not renowned for its megalithic sites, but the archaeological research and insights of Sam Semir Osmanagich, has helped unlock possibly the most controversial discovery ever found in Europe. A massive complex of pyramids, megaliths, tunnels and stone spheres that could rewrite European history, with the ‘Pyramid of the Sun’ being even larger that the Great Pyramid of Giza! The jury is still out on the authenticity of the finds, but numerous researchers and archaeologists who have visited the site, along with the amazing photographs, have kept the debate wide open. Come and decide for yourself at his keynote presentation at Megalithomania.

The keynote speaker for the event is another adventurer, David Hatcher Childress, who is well known for his groundbreaking exploratory research into ancient civilisations. Known as another real-life Indiana Jones, he will be discussing his travels in South America and the Pacific, looking at long-lost cities, mysterious megaliths and unusual ancient carvings. All in all there are 13 talks scheduled at the event with a “megalith-forum” hosted by our special guest and the inspiration for the conference, John Michell.
