DaveP writes: I'd like to announce the results of the collaboration between The Megalithic Portal and my Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website which has been going on for over a year. A huge amount of work has gone into cross-linking and cross-checking over 500 records on both our sites to create the best and most accurate prehistoric Dartmoor coverage ever put online.

I want to thank Anne T for the enormous amount of work she has put into adding new Dartmoor records on to Megalithic Portal. The aim that was pretty much achieved - being to synchronise the listings on both sites. I think this resulted in approx 30-50 records being added to PDW (mostly relating to iron age forts and settlements) and around 150-200 records to TMP - mostly relating to cairns and cists and any stone rows not previously included.

I'm very pleased with the outcome - [As are we - MegP Ed] and I think the result is outstanding!

We now together have the best and most accurate prehistoric Dartmoor coverage on line ever.

PS. That is 555 sites that are now linked and matched - which is really cool!

What we have now with this listing is pretty much every visible:

* Stone Circle
* Standing Stone
* Stone Row
* Neolithic tomb
* Cist
* Ring Cairn or significant Cairn
* Most prehistoric settlements
* Iron Age Forts

...on Dartmoor. There are possibly a few cists that are fragmentary which are not included on the basis they are unlikely or dubious sites. The cairns that are listed are restricted to include those listed by Joe Turner in his 1990 paper for the Devon Archaeological Society and a few more that cover the major sites.

It took me years to put together the above listing. In that context I know full well how much work was involved in updating the TMP records and checking them. So thanks again to Anne T and everyone who has helped with this.

Sounds great, Dave! Did you catch Tony Robinson on TV? He included Dartmoor in his latest walking series on TV and visited Merrivale without mentioning that it is next to a) the (only) east-west road on Dartmoor and b) a major quarry. Anyone interested in Merrivale might like to try out a walk we did in connection with The Megalithic Empire, the link is http://www.themegalithicempire.com/walks/walks/?p=200

The best guide is still William Crossing though it might be out of print now. The nineteenth-century antiquarians are often worth consulting I find.
