Country: Bulgaria An almost 7,000-year-old stone tablet found in Bulgaria bears carvings that might turn out to form one of the world's oldest inscriptions, a prominent archaeologist has announced. “These signs are unique and apparently bear a meaning,” Nikolai Ovcharov told a press conference.

Dr Ovcharov said he had received the tablet from a private collector who had unearthed it 20 years ago. The collector asked to remain anonymous because he risked prosecution for looting or criminal possession of antiquities.
The tablet — six centimetres long and about 7.5 centimetres wide — carries five distinct signs, each made up of two elements, Dr Ovcharov said.
“This could be the prototype of a script," he added.

Europe's oldest child skeleton unearthed in Bulgaria by coldrum on Wednesday, 17 January 2007

Archaeologists have unearthed an 8,000 year old skeleton of a child in the village of Ohoden, northwestern Bulgaria, the Sofia News Agency reported on Thursday, citing Darik News.

Archaeologist Georgi Ganetsovski, the leader of the excavation, said the finding had been made at the southern end of a pre-historical funeral facility in a pre-historical village, which was found just two metres below the current ground level and was completely preserved in its original form.

Archaeologists at the site had also discovered a whole skeletonof a woman a year ago, which dated from 8100 year BC and was one of the most ancient in Europe, Ganetsovski added.

The 8,000 year old child skeleton was supposed to be the most ancient one in Europe that had been found intact although the remains were partly damaged, said the archeologist.

It is believed that the inhabitants of the pre-historic village had been the first in the Balkans to discover pottery and build thermo-insulated homes, he added.
