The proposal for an interim engineered landfill close to the Mnajdra and Hagar Qim neolithic temples has been scrapped after fresh technical reports revealed that the long-term landfill at Ghallis, in the limits of Naxxar, could come into operation earlier than originally planned.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday (8th June) that contrary to previous, strongly held perceptions, laboratory results have shown that the rock at Ghallis was of no particular value.

This meant that excavations for the first cell at the proposed Ghallis landfill did not have to reach the previous depth of 35-40 metres, so the site would be ready to accept domestic waste much earlier - by November 2005 - and, therefore, a temporary landfill at Mnajdra was no longer necessary.
