Multi-periodA successful attempt to prevent a road from destroying local woodland was the unlikely inspiration for using ICT to document a school archaeology project.(by Emma Haughton, Guardian Unlimited) Maydown primary school in Northern Ireland, which won £5,000 in the BT / Guardian Education Awards, discovered during its campaign to stop the road that the area was home to a Neolithic site. It now plans to provide a live web link to cover its supervised archaeological dig, as well as set up a
website to document its discoveries.
"It will not only increase our pupils' historical knowledge and understanding," says Peter Monaghan, school vice-principal, "but it will significantly enhance their ICT skills by building the website and giving them a better understanding of how information technology can enhance communication and sharing information."
Around 40 11-year-olds will work on the project, which will be supervised by an archaeologist and the Department of the Environment. "What our project says is that anything is possible," says Monaghan, "If you've got an idea and are familiar with the technology, it's a great way that children can reach out and let other people see what they are doing."
