Neolithic and Bronze AgeThe British Museum has been urged to return a 4,000-year-old bronze age artefact to Wales. The Gold Cape of Mold is held in London because museums in North Wales are not secure enough to display it.Welsh Assembly member Alison Halford has called for the corselet to be handed back by the British Museum.
She told the Assembly: "If North Wales had such a museum we would be able to make a legitimate claim for the return of the Gold Cape of Mold.
"This is a bronze age artefact which rests in the British Museum and would not be allowed to return back to its rightful place because of a security problem.
"Had we a proper museum then the British Museum would be able to allow us it back which would be useful for tourism and economic development."
Welsh culture minister Jenny Randerson has provided extra funding to the council of museums to develop two museums so they can showcase more important artefacts. She has said one of those should be in North Wales.
Ms Randerson said: "There are 34 museums in North Wales which are members of the council for museums. I would very much hope one of those would be appropriate for the additional funding to provide the security needed for the more valuable artefacts.
"One would hope that with the improved security in one of them we would be in a position to perhaps reclaim this cloak."
The finely embossed gold cape is regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of bronze age craftsmanship in the world. It would have fitted over the shoulders, upper arms and body of its wearer and it is thought to have been used for ceremonial occasions. A replica is displayed at the heritage centre and museum in Mold.
