One might say that Carl Davis really digs his work. He's part detective, part scientist and part theorist, which equals total archaeologist — so much to the point that his son and daughter, Spencer and Maddie, have rebelled against hiking any more with Davis and his wife, archaeologist Sara Scott.
"They staged a sit-down strike in Chaco Canyon (near the Anasazi ruins in New Mexico)," Davis recalled recently, laughing. "The refused to go any further or look at one more rock art site."
He pauses a moment, thinking about the Anasazi site, and his enthusiasm for the ancient ruins spills out.
"That site has one of the most detailed archaeological records of anywhere in the world, for looking at an anthropological and historical sense of the problems that might have applied in the past or today," Davis said.
